Hi Lisa:
Some institutions have moved away from allowing the use of extra-credit due to some issues that arise.
If a student can pass a course without demonstrating an understanding of the primary concepts, that may end up resulting in angry feelings from other students who have worked hard to earn a solid grade.

There is a policy of not allowing extra credit on grade, however I may include a couple of extra questions on a test that will not count if the students get them wrong, just to help a little
I am not a big believer in extra credit. I have found over my 17 years of teaching that the only students who participate in extra credit are the ones who do not need it. The ones who are failing want it but I do not feel that they deserve it. I will only offer extra credit to the entire class, not to individuals. I do not believe it is fair unless it is offered to everyone. The opportunity for extra credit needs to be earned.
I don't believe in extra credit. For if it is extra, then the students generally don't need it. My experience has been that students who ask for extra credit are those who have just blown off an assignment--perhaps with the hope of making it up with what they hope will be an easier extra assignment.
What I do offer, however, is the opportunity for students to rewrite papers (after I've returned them with comments and editing marks) to achieve a higher grade. This is not extra credit, it is extra work--and students who take advantage of this seem to incorporate the concepts into their skill set.
We do not use extra credit. Did in the past, but do not anymore. I believe it has a place in some programs, but we have a nursing program and just do not use it anymore. I certainly understande why, also. Sometimes students may have the extra credit points to help them with their grades in the program, but I do not think EC helps with passing the State Board.
Extra credit should have no role in determining final grades--in fact, extra credit is never a good idea. Giving extra-credit assignments to failing students only rewards incompetence.
In my experience, giving the opportunity for extra credit on a regular bases results student needing extra credit to pass the class. This is my fourth year teaching in an adult learning environment. In my limited four years, I witness student relying on the extra credit becasue of lack of motivation to complete regular work assignments.
I have used extra credit in many different senerios. I have used the project based they talk about in the lesson and I have used the method of there is no extra credit.
I my remedial math class I am teaching currently, I use it as a way to make them study more. They have to successfuly complete it, check their work and can only do extra credit from one section of the chapter they are needing it(the section they are struggling with the most. Most importantly it must be done PRIOR to the exam (so they can't fail the test then do extra credit to make it up). I usually have a one-on-one conversation with the student prior to the doing extra credit that allows me to feel that the extra credit is needed in the future success of the student in the class (for example they must get this concept before they can move on).

At the school I work at, it is actually against our policy to offer extra credit assignments. Fortunately for me, I am not a fan of offering extra credit for a few reasons. I have noticed that the students that are already doing very well are typically the ones that will accept the challenge of taking on more work. The students that would actually benefit from the extra work, don't often choose to do the extra credit assignments anyway.
I don't think that there should even be an option to do work that you may prefer over the original projects that were assigned. I am completely against only offering extra credit to the students that "need" it. I think that if an instructor chooses to offer extra credit, it must be available for every student in that class.

I think extra credit is good for students that are needing to do extra re-enforce classroom learning. I some students fill you should offer extra credit to automatic give them an "A". My students are calling it the build in "A". I say no because some with do less work.
