keeping students inform

It is critical to have students up to date on their progress. Returning graded exams within a day is highly appreciated by students and also a best practice.

Craig,
Ideally, all learning ought to be rehearsed, practiced, applied, and assessed. This would take creative planning, and a whole lot of time. But applying the basic principles can be performed in shorter, simpler ways, and the feedback students would receive would be quite beneficial.

It is important to get students test results and lab assignment results as quickly as possible so that they know the areas that they struggled, and can learn from those mistakes.

Jean,
Absolutely! Students want and need direction, and one of the most effective and beneficial methods is to meet with them individually. In doing so, we can convey areas of need, ways to improve if needed, offer support and encouragement, and help build trust by demonstrating we care. Respect and credibility are also enhanced by establishing this one on one relationship.

I find meeting with my students and discussing grades and progress, keeps them aware and motivated to improve in areas of deficiency.

Anita,
This is a great idea. My institution has an announce section on both the main web portal, and also for each course, so the instructor is able to post urgent or pending dates, news, articles, assignments. We can also define the windows for these announcements to open and end. Of course, this will only inform students if the open their computers and read the notices.

We try to have an assembly every morning so that the students are all on the same sheet of paper and kept up to date on all that is happening!

Susan,
Absolutely! The personal touch, and abilty to offer support and encouragement along with grade and performance information helps convey the instructor cares and is interested in the students success.

I like to have informal grade conferences periodically and if the student wants to know. The school's electronic gradebook only summarizes at course end, so , along-the-way conferences are the way to keep the student up to date.

Peggy,
We are demonstrating our respect for the students effort, diligence, and performance when we do ll we can to share progress and offer suggestions.

Totally agree. Being on top of returning assignments and exams reduces anxiety for the student which is conducive to learning. Also shows organization, promptness and the interest the instructor has for the students learning experience.

Mildred,
As instructors, I believe we should do all we can to give our students every assistance we can. Returning quizzes and tests, graded homework, and immediate feedback on other graded assignments contributes to positive forward progress, and also conveys the instructor cares about their success and achievement.
