Thomas,
Right, and when we can make that information sharing more personal, it can also provide added trust and respect for one another.

All students desire constant affirmation that they are learning the content. Whether it is an A student or a C student, feedback is essential for their interest, retention and success. One always wants to know if they are doing well at work, at play, and at school. I am no different.

Jimin,
Discussing performance is like steering students on a journey closer to their destination. Clarifying where adjustment, improvement, or emphasis is needed is ually appreciated by students.

It gives open window to discuss why they are doing right and wrong. Also grade is a one of the way to communicate between the instructor and the student. Therefore, the status needs to be informed all the time to keep the communication for both.

Erica,
Great! Even strong students need and want feed back about their performance. Unfortunately we have to sometimes spend more time with weaker students, but all students benefit from current grade and performance staus.

Joshua,
Right. Serious adult learners want and need cuurent informatiion in order to decide how best to use their study time, along with any areas they may need additional study.

Beverly,
Giving students current grade and performance data can only help them reach their educational journey on time and in good shape.

I try to let them know weekly where they stend in the course. I show them their grade and then show them where they are weak and wheree they are strong. This keeps them motivated and intereted and escited about learning.

So they know how their work is paying of with their grade and to give them time to improve if needed.

My students like to know their status on a daily basis. The students have set goals for themselves and want to make sure they are on track.

Kari,
Students will appreciate your diligence and promptness. This is partly how trust and respect are developed.

I remember when I was a student and until I received a grade on an exam, I was anxious/nervous. You study so hard and put so much effort into preparation, that you want to see how it pays off. I am entering into teaching for the first time in February and I will make sure to get the exams back the next class period!

Megan,
This is a great sentiment! With perceived purpose, most (sincere) students will be challenged to do what they need to be successful.

Rebecca,
It really is critical for students to know their status. It's as important as providing the content in the sense that like a journey, without feedback the student has way of knowing how close to their destination they've come.

Doretha,
Right. Asking questions. This is why I think meeting with students one-on-one to discuss their progress is important. I grade and return all assignments, quizzes and tests immediately, and the grades are posted in an elctronic gradebook that all students have instantaneous access to. Nonetheless, I still find I like to meet often and regularly to discuss progress.

Barry Westling

Giving students purpose is key! If they do not feel that the course is relevant to their own lives, then they will not try to be successful. It's almost like they sabatoge their own learning. Students need that reinforcement that they are progressing through the course to work harder.
Megan

Keeping students informed of their status is crucial as a motivator to continue doing well if they are or to improve in areas where oppotunity presents. In our courses we have four areas of grading that determine the final grade, students may be doing well in one area but not realize that something else will be negatively affecting their overall grade. By discussing grades perdiodically we can also continue to offer tutoring and inform students of other resources available to them.

This keeps them aware of where they are grade wise prior to the course ending. They have an idea what they need to focus on more and even a chance to ask questions if needed.

Sheena,
Yes, friendly competition can be a stimulating motivation to be among the better performing students. I like to encourage all students, and give suggestions for improvement I believe will help the students succeed. Personal discussions work better to instill trust between me and my students.

Barry Westling

It is important so students can gauge for themselves how they are performing in your class. It also helps to alleviate test anxiety and stress. Sometimes students can be very competitive. So, keeping students informed of their status can provide good encouragement to perform better.
