Kathleen,
Yeah, respect is earned, and the best way is to assure the students we are capable and proficient is through appropriate preparation. Then the respect...and trust begins to develop.

Brendon,
Sure, we set the tone. We establish expectations for our students, and in turn, they expect us to be fully ready, prepared, organized, confident, and thorough in our delivery of key course material.

Jeffery,
We are experts at what we do. We know that, but only through solid preparation can we convey that sentiment to our students.

Being organized and preapred to teach, first demonstrates respect for the students and their educational process. It shows that you care about their learning and have made it a priority. It shows that the class instruction will likely be easy to follow and best prepare them to learn. It turn it ensures that the students will respect you. They will want to listen and feel confident in you as a leader.
I believe it sets an example and an expectation for the students as well as demonstrates your commitment to them. If you are serious and invested in your course, your students will be too.
The benefits are twofold: 1. The instructor feels confident and ready. This helps reduce any stress or nervousness they may have. 2. The students' first impressions are positive in that they see they have a professional, qualified instructor. True, this is only a first impression, but it serves to quickly put the student's mindset into being part of a professional atmosphere.
LaNeisha,
It's absolutely clear that good preparation saves time, something few of us has an excess of. I've found for each hour of preparation, it saves me multiples of that time in delivery and facilitation.

Aileen,
You're right, as a method for organization, color, sizes, folders, binders -- all are methods that help keep order. When students sense order, their thinking is clearer as well.

Its important for an instructor to be prepared and organized becaus students need every oppritunity to learn and engage in the material that is being presented when an instructor is not prepared it takes away precious larning time.
in your lecture it also stated that color print outs help to bring the student in, but I also think it helps them to keep organized. I at times suggest to my students to color code some of their material. It draws them back into their own stuff as well as keep them organized to study.
Ryan,
Yes, and more stress is something we all can do without. Students do look to us for guidance and direction -- some might need it as a break from the chaos going on in the backside of their lives. When we're prepared, we convey we care, we know what we're doing, and we can assist the students to achieving the success they're seeking.

I feel that being prepared and organized for class does a couple things. First it shows students what you expect from them, the old saying Lead by example. The next thing it does is makes it easier and less stressful. If you are not prepare mistakes can and will happen, this leading to stress.
