BEING ORGANIZED

Being prepared for class helps the students see that you care, and are ready to get down to business,on time. I feel it helps them know that I care and am organized.

Hi Linda:
Wisdom comes with time I guess, eh? I had ideas in class and tried to "switch gears", only to have it totally backfire. Even a few hours before class may not work. A good idea takes time to simmer, but, ah, the flor is so much mor robust as the result.

When I first started teaching and would come up with a "brilliant idea" on the way to teach my night class, I would try to present it that very night. Now I've learned to give it to them the next week, after I've had a chance to organize my thoughts and clarify the idea to present to the students.

Rebecca,
I completely agree 100%. If you are organized and prepared it also helps you mentally prepare for the class. It does show them how being on time is important, and showing your passion for what you do.

Hi Janell:
Good points all. We do owe our students, our employers and our professions the courtesy of doing what we're paid to do. Preparedness is a way of self disipline and teachers who come to class really do set a bad example for their students and are reinforcing a really bad habit. I know we all get busy, and there may be times that are legitimatly beyond our control. That should be the exception, not the practice. And you're right, students know when we're not ready for class.

Adult students sacrifice a lot to return to school; these sacrifices include finiancial and time. I chose to become an instructor and have an obligation to do everything possible to help each student suceed. The very least I can do is come prepared for class and have a structed class that makes it evident I am prepared for class. Being organized lets the students know I have come prepared for class and sets an exsample for them. They can also learn organizational skills by the exsample I set for them.

Hi Detra:
Quite correct. Managing your time and the students time to maximise the precious little time we often have to work with our students makes being organized a necessity. Getting all the media, resources, copies, equipment,, etc. or whatever else is needed beforehand so that as students begin to appear for class, you're there to visit, answer questions, essentialy reinforce developing relationships. I think most students like to feel their instructor is will to share a bit of their time visiting. It also build mutual respect.

Being organized is essential to classroom management. Students need to see that you are prepared and ready to start the class with a purpose.

Hi Nicholas:
Nice example. We can and should be positive and professional role models that we can demonstrate consistently every day, and after time, for the students, they view our actions as matter of fact and the only way to conduct business. Some programs have special classes to address these topics, and they are good. We can reinforce these tenets of professionalism by being good examples a little bit every day.

Oganization, priortization, delagation, are all skills an instructor must bring to the classroom. Our objective is to deliver information and skills as seamlessly as possible.
When you conduct your class using (OPD) they also learn by example to conduct themselves professtionaly and effiecently.

Hi Janet:
Success is when students learn. That would be difficult for a teacher if they are not prepared well. We can be good role models if we want to take the time.

Hi Bruno:
Great! What is cool is if instructors can maintain excitement - it will be contagious!

Regards, Barry

Their reaction after a well set up question, when I show the answer is priceless is like they are as excited as I am!

Being organized is very important if an instructor is going to be successful in the class room. When an instructor goes before a class he or she must be organized and prepared. They must be ready to present the material in organized and professional manner at all times.

Hi Rebecca:
Gosh, time is so valuable. We need to make sure almost every moment we have with our students is focused on their learning. I don't mean every minute is spent lecturing, or any specific actity exclusively. I mean an organized class provides all of the resources and preparation to give the students their full complement of instructional activities. This takes planning and effort by the teacher. Students will know when the teacher is prepared and ready to Vicki.
