Guest speakers
I use guest speakers only when applicable. I use them for several reasons 1. They have a different perspective on a subject than many, 2. They often bring a new sense of excitment to the subject that makes that topic more meaningful for my students.
Kimberly,
Yes, students are rarely disappointed when a new or different individiual appears to speak about the work setting. I find that questions spring up from the students and that leads to a satisfying feeling and sometimes renewed energy towards focusing on their studies.

I invite a Practice Manager from a referral hospital to speak in my Practice Management class. I basically present the subject matter to my students via a PowerPoint presentation and videos prior to his visit. His presentation provides reinforcement of the subject matter and the students get a "real-world" perspective of the class subject matter. I believe having the guest speaker drives the students’ enthusiasm and peaks their interest.
Francis,
Absolutely true. Yet if the guest speaker topic is directly related to the topic, subject lesson, or specific career field, it adds more than what the teacher could on their own. The reality is most teachers struggle to get even 1-2 guest speakers over a 6-12 month period. I don't think that is too much.

Their is a downfall to this. Too many guest speakers and or movies etc. Also become monotonous and can show a lack of interest on the instructors' part.
Francis,
Good reasons. I too find the student response from a good guest speaker or applicable field trip infuses students with enthusiasm, interest, and often resets their original drive to learn their career choice as evidenced by an effort to perform better in class. That's always a good thing.
