Often what makes subject matter difficult is the notion that it s difficult. Confidence that you you can transpose to your students will often allow them to do better in this setting.
There may be organizations out there to help support teachers that may be losing their edge, but the problem is only those professionals that recognize they are losing their edge join those organizations. The problem is with the instructor that s happy with the status quo. They hurt this profession and it doesn't appear that anything is being done to identify this group.

When I make up a test I do not try to fool the students. I test to be sure they understand the material I consider to be important to know. I also grade my tests so that I can find out how well I traught. If I find certain areas that all the students do poorly on I must take some of the blame for not doing better in those areas.
A back up plan is necessary and it should not be inferior to your original plan. It has been my experience that my back up plan ended up being my main plan for the next cycle.
I can always get a students attention when I am able to demonstrate why I am the instructor. It gives a sense of to the student of why I am the instructor. It confirms your alpha status.

Their is a downfall to this. Too many guest speakers and or movies etc. Also become monotonous and can show a lack of interest on the instructors' part.
I have been a teacher for over 10 years and the most common problem I findnwith experienced teachers is thatnthey become complacent. Teaching can become routine over the years, but the instructor can not loose that edge. You must always find a new twist to your presentation to keep it fresh.
I have multicultural classes which presents an obvious challenge. I try to focus on the common thread which unites them in this class and how I portent it is to achieve their individual goals. I try to do as much one on one as possible but that is not always possible. I therefore accentuate as much as possible a common motivation (success) as I can. It has worked out well thus far.
I teach very complex and often dry subject matter. I enjoy giving my students quirky facts that relate to what I am teaching, I.e. A different spin on the subject. My students become more involved when they discover the relevance of the topic at hand.

I use guest speakers only when applicable. I use them for several reasons 1. They have a different perspective on a subject than many, 2. They often bring a new sense of excitment to the subject that makes that topic more meaningful for my students.
