Types of Instructors
I enjoyed reading the list of different instructor types, i.e. peacemaker, drill sergeant, etc. However, I feel it is important to emphasize that we can fall into at least a couple of these types from one degree to another. For example, I see myself as a peacemaker, but I can be a drill sergeant as well. The course mentions taking a personality assessment, in which I am in total agreement. However, most of these tests will not try to pigeon hole you into one distinct personality type. Rather, they will indicate your tendencies and to what degree you have towards a particular personality type.
Patricia,
I think it begins with our motive -- to give our students the training they need for productive, successful employment. To fulfill that overarching goal, we have to wear many hats.

I agree with you. By and large we are more one role than most but I believe we can all take on the role of many of these instructors. It just depends on the scenario. Sometimes we have to act as drill sergeants but other times the peacemaker role is most effective.
Jessica,
I like to begin classes with being approachable, patient, fair, and clear regarding expectations. Students will push limits if they think they can, and that may require a firmer stance. But if we present ourselves as being of assistance and wanting success for the students, they should appreciate that sentiment and problems should be minimal.

I agree that as instructors, we need to be able to wear many different hats. Sometimes we need to be hard and sometimes we need to be soft. Our type should be flexible to what the student needs
Glenn,
I agree that these personality types assessments at best can give a general indication of several variations of personality or teaching style. I once did one, and later, about a week later, took the same assessment, and got different results. I think these can be helpful but the results have to be used carefully.
