If the student can apply the concept to a real world situation, even if it is not related to the subject matter, it will help them acquire the skill. I teach my students binary to decimal conversion, which is intimidating to a lot of them. However, we have find a way of using a real world situation (making change with money) to help them grasp on to this concept. Even our most challenging students will get it.

If you use a paper grade book or have to calculate the grading on some assignments before entering them in the grade book, I recommend using Microsoft Excel. With basic knowledge and an understanding of calculating sums, totals, and percentages; I believe you will find Excel to be a real time saver. In most cases, you just need to enter the grades and Excel does all the calculating for you. I enjoyed reading the list of different instructor types, i.e. peacemaker, drill sergeant, etc. However, I feel it is important to emphasize that we can fall into at least a couple of these types from one degree to another. For example, I see myself as a peacemaker, but I can be a drill sergeant as well. The course mentions taking a personality assessment, in which I am in total agreement. However, most of these tests will not try to pigeon hole you into one distinct personality type. Rather, they will indicate your tendencies and to what degree you have towards… >>>

Texting and online sites such as Facebook can also be very time consuming. Yet these are technologies that our students use on a regular basis and are one of their primary methods of communication. How do you cope with these technologies? -Glenn Hobbs
