Role of instructor personality in delivery selection

What role does your personality play in the selection of delivery methods for your courses?

Adrienne,
Enthusiasm is infectious. I think most students like to be immersed in this kind of learning atmosphere.

Barry Westling

Amy,
Relating important information in an interesting or humorus way is usually memorable, because students can usually relate.

Barry Westling

Yes, especially laughter. Humor is a way of keeping the students engaged and also relaxed. They also tell me it helps them remember things.

I remember having an instructor who's personality was exciting and always exuded the love she had for her chosen profession. As students we were always eager to get to her class to absorb her positive energy. She was knowledgeable and always enthused. This easily allowed for us to strive to do our best in her class.

Cleider,
So true. I always liked instructors who were natural, approachable and patient. Their sincerity in helping me was memorable.

Barry Westling

Meri,
Yes, and being approachable and patient is like the icing on the cake, that promotes students wanting to participate, ask questions, and engage. These traits are attributes any instructor can provide.

Barry Westling

Prof. Westling,

I feel that our personality is very important when prepare and organize our classes. Being able to share our knowledge clearly is very important. Being confident of our knowledge is also important. Students know the difference and they will voice their concerns. Being able to speak to the students with confidence and clarity is an integral part of the learning process. Knowing the material and using different methods also helps the students understand the material at hand.

all depends on the chemistry of the class. teach on friendly way, with good healthy jokes help the students to be more relax to learn the subject. Also by reaserch articles is proved when the students are happy with the class room the process of learning is much easier. Since physiological speaking happyness increase the production of seratonin and that makes easier to learn the subject.

IDA-MAY,
I think diversity in personality is helpful, as long as the students appreciate the instructors intent is to effective in the instructional process.

Barry Westling

The role of personality has good and bad consequences. If the instructor has a flamboyant personality it can help students stay focus on the task at hand. but to much of the flamboyant personality can also distract from the material being taught. The role of personality is helpful if the instructor knows how and when to use it.

The role of the Instructor's personality in delivery system is important because it need to stay upbeat and enthusiastic. This will motivate students.

Valerie,
All these actions are effective methods. Student engagement is nearly always a constant challenge, even for day classes. Keeping the student needs in mind can only be a beneficial approach.

Barry Westling

John,
Being approachable lets students know they can come to you. Coupled with patience, courteousness and willingness to assist each and every student will contribute to achieving student respect, high morale, and credibility.

Barry Westling

I prefer to use various delivery methods (i.e. instructional videos, power points, hands-on activities, games, and lecture). I am a visual and hands-on learner, but there are also times when I prefer material to be verbally broken down for clarification, but I am often overwhelmed with lectures alone, so I try to keep this in mind during instructional time. I want to be able to keep the students engaged, especially with teaching evening classes that last until 11p. Being able to get the students up and moving helps in keeping them awake. The makeup of my personality and learning skills is naturally reflected in my teaching style. My personality is serious in nature, so I am mindful of sharing my experiences in the field of massage therapy through storytelling, be it humor, horror, or tragedies of losing clients.

I have been a musician, a performer, a martial arts instructor and a public speaker all of my life. Use of projection, humor and storytelling combined with excellent recall of my diverse background in education, corporate customer service and the arts manages to keep my students engaged. The fact that I practice my trade helps as well. My personality tends to create a rather relaxed atmosphere with quickly established bonds. Students know that I am not distant or detached. I am always present and available.

Ajay,
I think enthusiasm, passion and patience can be conveyed by nearly every instructor, but perhaps in their own way. In any case, students are just more likely to engage when they feel there is a positive atmosphere for learning.

Barry Westling

Personality does paly important role in delivery method of some of our courses. The courses which are interesting and not difficult( anatomy and physiology) most of the instructors can deliver them without much problem. But when it comes to difficult and not that interesting courses (coding) how you navigate them will depend on you personality, to some extent, even if you are very good about the course. One should make sure to be pleasing and ready to see blank and confused faces and be prepared to change ones delivery method accordingly.

Margaret,
Yeah, I call it "the upward flow", the atmosphere where is more interesting and satisfying to join in the activities than not to. Enthusiasm is a contagious emotion.

Barry Westling

It is vitally important to integrate your personality into your teaching methods. Your enthusiasm and passion for even the most unexciting subjects can keep your students awake and ready to learn. Your enthusiasm for learning hopefully will be contagious!
