Powerpoints and hands on skills

I like powerpoints because they help my students get to know the steps of the hands on skills they are learning. The read it, they see it, they do it!

Hi Daniel:

One general, all-purpose guideline to remember about using power-point is this – don’t read the slides to the students. Unless you’re deliberately trying to make a point, reading slides is the quickest way to have students tune out during the lesson.

Instead, it’s better to cover the main points on the slide, and have the students refer to the notes on their own.

Hi Amy:
On the other hand, PPT can be dull if not used effectively. I'm not disagreeing with you. Just pointing out that ANY presentation style should be used effectively to be sure to keep the student engaged.

That is my process, exactly! SEE IT, HEAR IT, DO it! When you can get students to understand this, you win.

Powerpoint is definately here to stay. In fact it's being taught in elementary school. I love the visual effect of ppt but I try not to use it too often, saving it for points I really have to stress. Because ppt is such an attention grabber, when I do use it, the points are truly "powered".

Powerpoint appears here to stay. I expect my students may use them in their careers. I use them and I use at least one assignment where my students develop them to help prepare them for their careers.
