Getting a feel for the students in front of you.
Pretest is a great tool to use for assessing a students' knowledge base of a subject. It also helps the instructor to know what level the student is on; whether beginner, intermediate, or advance since all of the students are not at the same level; yet they are in the same class setting at the same time. Assessments allow the instructor to pace the class at a level where the beginners will be successful and at that rate, intermediate and advanced students should not have a problem if they apply themselves.
A pre-test can determine where your students are at as far as knowing about the material. It can create a starting point for you. By knowing where they are at knowledge wise will allow you to start building on what they already know and start the understanding and comprehension right from the start.
