I think Pretesting is often necessary, specific for those stdents without previous experience or knowledge of the subject. I have used pretesting in the past specifically for those students for whom English is a second language, or those who have test anxiety, and is has helped them. These are some extreme cases, but if the student is present in class, and visits the school everyday with the determination to earn a diploma, I thin the instructor should reach out and guide the student. For students with lack of experience pestesting will be benefcal and make them more comfortable with taking and engaing in the subject.

In my course, math is a large portion. Career students may or may not have experience or knowledge of this math or they vary greatly. It is imperative that I understand right away the overall level of the class regarding this subject. With the pretest, I can easily assign study partners and arrange the class into groups so no one feels left behind or the pace of the class too slow. I teach to sometimes three or four groups individually until we are all at the appropriate level to continue in the course.

I like the idea of pretesting my students; it provides me with the understanding of where the student stands. I administer a test that feeds off of the perquisite class on the second day of class. The first pretest helps me assess the starting point of the students, as well as provides me with feedback of what there study habits may be. Also, how well are they retaining the information that pertains to their program? The pretest at the beginning of every unit allow me to identify potential pitfalls and aid me in developing multiple plans as necessary.

I really like pretests, they give us a good feel for basic knowledge levels. i pass them out, give some time for them to work on them and watch the reactions as an initail guage. I then walk around the class looking at answers. When it appears that they have gone as far as they can but, before frustration sets in we go over it as a class. filling in the answers with answers to guide them. I then tell them to keep it with thier notes and look at it daily to use it as a guage of the course. As we go through the course they should see the answers very clearly and if not then they know exactly what topics to ask questions about. I find pretests very helpful at many levels.

Pretests allow us to see the students prior knowledge; although I do not rely heavily on pretest because students may have been lucky at getting the answers correct.

It helps me evaluate the students understanding of certain areas..I can then gear the class to meet their needs..

Pre tests are useful because they help minimize time spent on previously mastered course content. Pre-tests also provide a before and after tool that can be used for national and accreditation reporting.

I have had similar issues. In one particular course last term I could have saved myself lots of wheelspin by pretesting basic science concepts which I mistakenly assumed were covered in prereqs.

It lets the instructor know the amount of knowledge the student has so that the teaching material is not above the understanding of the student.

I always use a pretest or a survey in my first class to see where my class is. I am looking to see what the education level is, how long have they been out of school and what their skill level is for my class. This helps to know how I will put this class together to reach as many as I can. I then know how much time I have to cover all the content and in what style I will teach it. This works really good. I have had great student engagement and feedback.

I always use pretest or surveys to see where my class is in the very first class. This help me to know how and in what direction I will need to take the class. I look for level of educations, how long have they been out of school and what their skill level is for my class. It works out great. I have good student engagement and feedback.

It lets you know where your class is on knoledge. It also helps so you can set up groups more even to keep everyone on schedule

Hi Jeffrey:

One of the benefits of using pretests is they may help reveal what kind of learning style your student uses. Knowing this may help you create more effective lesson plans.

The backgrounds of our students are very diverse. I plan to use the pretest to help in establishing the similarities and differences of the students in each class. As a part of the pretest, I plan to also ask what two things each student sees to be the greatest challenge in succeeding in that particular class. I can't wait to see the answers!

this is a way to let you know how well is your students prepare and how much information they are able to process

I am very much interested in trying out the pre-test in my developmental math class I am teaching.
The information I cover, the student should have learned at one point in their educational career. I think this would help me see where I need to spend more time and where I can move forward a bit faster. I notice this changes class to class as to what is retained from previous years.
I hope to implement this next term.
Thank you!
Kristin

I am going to try this next term. Just because they pass the last class does not determin thier ability to preform well in this more advanced class.
