Hi Dennis:
One of the benefits of using pretests is they may help reveal what kind of learning style your student uses. Knowing this may help you create more effective lesson plans.

Pretest are very helpful to me because the give me an assessment of what the student knows thus far. It also allows me to see the range of knowledge in different skills and this lets me focus what I need to teach and be more efficient.
Pretest is a good way to assess student learning styles. Observation in another way to assess the student's learn styles to help better prepare you lesson plans
They let you know where the student's are in knowledge, so you know how to plan your day, and the rest of the course.
Pretest can help get a basic knowledge of what the student already nows, but does this really give you the information you require to teach the full course.
My feeling of pretest is that a student come into class, " Hi my name is Tina, I am going to give you a pretest to see what you know about the course you are about to take".
Now, after giving the pretest you have students that are very advance in their studies, you have some in the middle, and other who are taking the class because it is mandatory to get their certification, who did poorly.
What would the next step be?
Break the class up and teach in groups, or teach below the excell students?
I teach an electrical course that incorporates a pre-test. I find this tool a great help as I can use the results to help determine where the class is as far as subject matter. I know where i need to slow down and spend more time on certain topics. I can also use this to help emphasize tutoring and other areas of help for the student. Usually students are very nervous when this class starts and by using the pre-test I can direct them and reassure them that help is available. On the other hand, when the pre-test is very good, I know i have the ability to dive a little deeper than normal on topics so I can keep their interest up.

A pretest/postest for a course can be very benefical for the student and the instructor. The student can get concrete evidence of growth in content area the course covers. The instructor can gain specific evidence of student learning by completeing statistical anaylsis of the pretest/postest results.
I think that would be perfect. It gives you an idea in what areas you may need to expand on or poteially have more visual aids and demonstration for.
Pretests are vital in my class because they decide what material needs to be covered first. I'll know how elementary I need to start so I don't leave any students behind that may not have the knowledge base as the intermediate students.
