I feel that pretesting gives you a good idea of what type and how much "base" knowledge the student has.
Hi Rhonda:
One of the benefits of using pretests is they may help reveal what kind of learning style your student uses. Knowing this may help you create more effective lesson plans.

By using pretest and item analysis, I can determine difficulty area that must be emphasized and reinforced and thus may be given a longer allotted time segment during the class. Students may write their names in order for me to have mental notes of students to be given reinforcement work sheets.
It would help us greatly, but it might also limit access to our institution to the very student that would and has excelled at our training facilities. . . mjm

I currently use a pre-test. It gives me a good idea of what skills specific students need help or more practice in. For example, if a large portion of my class has trouble with math I will spend part of a class going over the basics. If it is just a couple of students I will work with them individually.
I think a pretest will help I.D. those whose first language is not English. This might be a secondary objective after an accessment of knowledge base.
Pretests helps me determine the different experiences and backgrounds my students bring into the classroom. They then will help me to prepare my teaching plans and strategies that will facilitate successful learning.

Pretest will allow you to evaluate the learning styles of the class ,plus you will know what areas of knowledge they may lack in so you can give more attention to those areas
