Pretests are a great way to gauge your class knowledge level. They will tell the instructor how in-depth material should be covered. I really like using pretests because it allows to me to not waste time on things the students already understand.
In the past we have had administrators who enroll students in a course when they have not had the prerequisite. It is more work for the Program Directors but we not have the Program Directors do all of the scheduling for the students. The Program Directors and instructors know which courses have prerequisites and we are in control to assure that they have the prerequesites before being enrolled in a course. When someone from outside the department performed the scheduling they often failed to look at prerequesites (because they had too many to keep track of).
I think using pretests before the class actually starts is an excellent way to assess what the students know and where you need to go with the class so by the end of the course the material is covered and the student feels more confident in what they actually needed to learn.
Pretests show you (the instructor) how to proceed in teaching the student. It tells you what they know and what they need to know.
I think a pre test is a great idea to focus in on the information that the students dont know. I have a mixed class where some of the students have had a certain class and others have not. I try and devide them into groups and help them as needed with what they dont understand. This way the rest of the class is able to move on and these students dont feel left behind.
I teach four different classes, and none of them use pretests, but some use study guides where the students have to look up the answers in the book.
I can see the advantage of pretests, but our curriculum is preset for us.
I will bring this up to our department head for review.
Pretests help me better understand the background of my audience and how I can best reach out to them. Also, I think it relieves some of the anxiety the student feels when they enter the course...to be able to reveal what they may/may not know in the subject. It's a beginning to a student-teacher connection.
Hi Tim:
One of the benefits of using pretests is they may help reveal what kind of learning style your student uses. Knowing this may help you create more effective lesson plans.

it gives the instructor aa baseline as to the level of knowledge the students have and one can precede further upon this information
I have used pretests in the past. They have been extremely helpful. They gave me a more accurate starting point for my subject matter and a better understanding of my students' needs. I incorporated multiple choice/response, sentence completion/fill in the blank and 1-2 essay questions. Based on the responses, I could make a quick assessment of reading/education levels and experience levels. The pretests allowed me to better present my course content.
