big help special in medical carrers you are able to preperfor you students in differents areas
Pretests can be helpful tools to determine how much course-specific information a student has retained. For example, if I am teaching a course that is the second in a series of Foundations courses for the discipline, I can pretest on items from the first Foundations course to get an accurate picture of the amount and type of information or skills retained from that first course. Also, consider use a skills-based pretest for the hands-on, practical applications within the curriculum.
It gives you an idea of how much the students know before getting to your class. I've noticed that most of the students are not retaining what they have heard over and over in prior classes. Reviewing is a must before taking it to the next level
I have not used this approach but I think it is a great idea. A good way to realize the students strengths and weaknessess. Maybe those who seem to be behind could be referred to a tutor right away which would help them with tools to become successful. This would also give a good idea on where to begin the course as far as review.
I really like the idea of a pretest, this gives me an idea of where the students stand/preknowledge of the course content, and how I will need to adjust myself to be able to teach them the information that I have for them.
Hi Michele:
Pretests can also reveal what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning that much more effective.

When I started this term, I gave my class a pretest. I am teaching College Algebra and I wanted to see the level that the students brought into the class. This gave me a feel for the abilities of each student and what I could cover the first night.
I have used pretests in lab. We had several students who did not read the assigned reading before class and were unable to perform the tasks as requested. A pretest was implemented (10 questions) and counted towards their grades. In order to pass the lab., students needed 80% on each pretest. I could not believe the difference. It was hard at the beginning because students were very upset about that new rule but after few weeks, it was very pleasant to teach lab. again. Their performance during class was above our expectations.
a pre test can backfire on you, if a student does well on a pretest, they might get a false sense of security and not focus on the material and actually score lower on the actual test.
Helps them get a base knowledge
I have frequently heard other instructors utilize this tool as a quick determinate to measure "where" their students are at. Just like assessing personality and learning styles it is important to understand what level your students are starting at otherwise you have a high risk for frustration, misunderstanding and ultimately failure to reach learning goals.
Barry,
Using pretest can help access the knowledge and skills of the class. This helps to identify areas that can be problems. This allows the instructor to plan or modify his instructional plan.

keeps there head in the game
Hi James:
By adjusting the level of instruction to where the student is currently in their level of understanding is a perfect way to support the idea of using an EFFECTIVE teaching style based on how the student learns.

Hi Warren:
And, these tools are a great way to show you what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning that much more effective.

Hi Ruth:
Another thing these tools are great for are potentially showing you what kind of student learner you have, making lesson planning that much more effective.

Hi Deborah:
Pre-tests are a great way to both gauge where the student is in the material, and also to potentially learn what kind of learner they are which can help make for more effective lesson planning.

I havent used pretests as planning tools but always take exam questions and use that in my planning. I am a bid advocate for pretests or quizes or anything that will help students get ready for an exam.
Me niether but I've been subject to them without a full understanding of why, this is an "aha" moment
I have never used a pre test, but after this education I am going to try .
