Question

Would it be ignorant to give certain students remedial work if there are only a few who don't understand the work while the class as a general whole does?

Terry,
Yes, and many would define that as student-centered learning. To the degree possible, student centered instructors individualize instruction for their students. In this way, each student gets the attention they need commensurate with their ability to learn and retain essential information.

Certain students might need further assistance when it comes to learning. It is critical to keep in mind that not all students learn the same way. As instructor, it is key to teaching different strategies to incorporate different learning styles.

Carlos,
The personal touch is rarely innappropriate, and students will nearly always benefit, if not immediately, sometime down the road. Our role as instructors should include personalization whenever applicable.

Not really, i think us, as intructors, need to help students in a very personal way to show them we care about them in a individual way.

Amy,
First, as the instructor, you should be able to do whatever you want. Instructors might be surprised to know that what they believe to be remedial, more than a few students may be yet lacking in complete understanding. I think for many concepts and key ideas, a student has to hear it or repeat it or practice it multiple times before they reach that "aha" moment. Reviewing material never hurts, so even if the reason is to help just a few, the majority of the class would probably still benefit.
