Anticipating Challenges
As an Instructor of science courses having a plan B is so important as students who develop phobia to science is always challenging. Diving the class and using a pretest is always a great idea.
I am open to any other suggestions.

While we are required to teach the curriculum, it is always best practice for assessment to drive instruction. Many college level instructors forget this concept. If the students are not being successful as a group....it is really more of a reflection on the teacher than the students....at least it is most of the time!
