Study groups
What I have found helpful is putting together study groups. We all meet once a week and I am there to oversee and answer any questions that may come up. I have found that my student's test averages have gone up and (I feel) there confidence has increased. In doing so, my student retention has gone up as well.

This sounds like an effective idea. Do you find that a lot of students voluntarily, participate in the study groups?

We encourage our students to form study groups on a day when they are done with class earlier than our normal academic day. The faculty are available to answer questions, review concepts, or work one on one with students. We have also seen scores improve as well as retention.
That is an interesting note about your student's improvement after you added study groups. I have thought about this approach and the students are welcome to make their own groups. I have never thought about making it part of the course. I will have to research this and see what information is available. Do you have any resources that might be helpful to me?
I strongly agree. I make a note to show up at least 3 hours before the begining of my class and stay a couple hours late every day just to make myself available for the one on one time with each student and encourage study groups for exams and practicals throughout my curriculum. Great way to assess the students and it also allows them to assess themselkves based off of their peers.
