games in the classroom

I think that having question and answer games , get more students involved. They seem to remember the material better. It pulls out the shy/insecure ones. This seems to balance the class more. They have their own discussions. Which many times make more sense to them.

I love games in the classroom. They can do a few things. They can promote team work, increase student interaction and most importantly they can help students retain information.

Hi Shani,
Awesome way to promote learning. I can see how the students learn and have great fun with this exercise.

I have found that in my itroduction to baking class when students have to learn the different ingredients. One method that I found is to have a "blind tasting" where the students are divided into teams and one person is "blind" and must guess the item present (e.g. sugar, salt, baking soda, honey, almond extract, etc).

I find that it is not only a team building activity but the students get a chance to learn what the different ingredients are.

Hi Deidra,
Nice way to break things up. Students love playing games, and they really retain the information better through the use of games.

I agree with Christine, playing game with student is a great way to enhance active learning. In the classroom I lecture for 30 minutes, and then I follow my lecture with a game or a group discussion. After the game or group discussion I start lecturing again for 30 minutes.

to bring games into the class room sounds like someone we will do in elementary but I have found that adult students like this as well. I like to play the game jeopardy with my students. It helps with interaction with all students.

Hi Megan,
I have seen this happen before as well, and I quickly learned that all games must come with established rules to maintain control.

I've had some really successful games played in classes, and I've also had some terribe outcomes. The competition got too fierce which caused some students to shut down. I adjusted my game playing and created concrete rules to help with that.

Hi Kodee,
Competition is a good thing when they are competing academically.

Patricia Scales

I agree! Competition brings my students out of the dulldrums. Especially if they are group competitions. Students become more apt when they know their teamates are depending on them.

Hi Peter,
Games are the best! Students love them, and they learn from them. Jeopardy is a popular game used by instructors in various subject matters.

games are a great way to interact with the class and a great icebreak on day 0ne.it is a great way to get all involed and it allows the shy one's a chance to shine and make learning fun for all involed.

Hi Christine,
I agree! Students come together during game time and the best of their learning shows.

Hi Eric,
Great response! It is great to see students become so involved in an educational game. I love to see the learning that is taking/taken place. It makes us proud as instructors too.

Hi Christine,
This is a great way for students to put what they have learned to practical use.

Hi Kim,
I like it! Competition is a great thing when it comes to learning. I have seen competitive students go up a letter grade. This is a good thing.

Hi Cecilia,
Students love games because they love to have fun while learning. Every opportunity you get to play an educational game to enhance the learning objective do so.

Chef,

You bring up an excellent point about creating a good sense of comraderie in the class which can really make the difference between classes coming together and learning more or fighting and halt the learning process for evveryone. Games can really break the ice and get everyone invested.

Hi Chef Ceci,

As I can see you are playing games again. I find that any form of entertainment that can capture the minds and imagination of the students is a fantastic learning tool. Especially when you have students of such varying ages and levels of security, this brings everyone down to the same level. They have camrederie which they may not have had their fellow students prior to these types of activities.
