I like to break up students in groups, but you have to be careful, some students like to coast along with groups and get away with doing nothing

I think you also have to include the ramifications of doing a procedure well and doing them incorrectly, that way the student will have an understanding why they need to make sure they do it correctly

students need to feel as though they are learning while they are in class, I think it helps to use the socratic method so that they can turn around and start to look at how what they are learning applies to what they will be doing in the future, the best way to do this is to have them do role plays and get them to see procedures and how they can have an active role in doing them, I like to have them think about what they are doing and why they are doing this part of the procedure

I would have to say that when I have students try to determine the type of tube they need to use when it comes to figuring out blood work such as which one would work with getting a cbc or a chem panel and how to arrange the tubes during the collection process so they do not have any cross contamination with the other tubes thus affecting how the result of the lab work can come out and be affected

Hi Erica,
I like how you have your students prethink and then go back to see how on point they were. Awesome way to get students to have great thoughts.

I have the students come up with a hypothesis and design an experiment. Once they perform the experiement, they revisit their hypothesis and explain why the hypothesis is or is not correct.

Hi Shannon,
I love how you make learning apply to a real-life situation. Students retain more when learing is applicable to the real world.

I instruct a first aid class and I like to have students try to apply what they learn during that class. One way I do this is by giving them a scenario in which themselves and a partner are hiking and run into some trouble. I give the basics and then they determine what type of first aid should be used along with all the specifics for whatever injury occured. This gets them thinking about what they would do, how they would react, and how they are going to apply what they just learned from the class in a real life situation.

Hi Shannon,
Students really enjoy during scenarios that are applicable to the workplace. It is amazing what students can come up with as to how they would handle a particular situation. Sometimes they are on point and very creative and really think outside of the box. Other times we as instructors have to reel them back in and make them understand what is the best way to do things. I really like how you get involved in the learning session as well.

An activity my class enjoys is a game that provides common scenarios in my career field. Students work in groups to solve the scenarios which leads to discussion of factors that may or may not help them through the scenario. When students come to a conclusion on how they will solve the problem I give other factors that may change how they would react in a certain situation. Many times it changes the entire outlook on the scenario and how the group approaches the problem.

Hi Becky,
This is true practical learning. Students love it when we make learning apply to the real world.

I currently teach endocrine health. When studying about diabetes, I have the students complete a case study in which they have to complete patient education for a newly diagnosed diabetic.

I love this idea! I am teaching student success and thought processes are part of my teaching. I am going to borrow this one. Thanks so much

Hi Herman,
This activity makes learning apply to the real world. Students love performing real-world scenarios because they know they will be better prepared for the workplace.

In Screamin' Eagle we pose performance goals for a givin engine displacement, and the students have to come up with part packages and or cobinations to reach or exceed the requirements we put before them

Hi Sarah,
Scenarios that pertain to the real world are awesome for students to learn how to handle various situations.

Patricia Scales

I give scenarios in which the students have to come up with the best solutions. For example, an emergency situation for a patient and the best treatment for the patient.

Hi Baneet,
Case studies, role playing, scenarios, and ethical questions are great activities to get your students to think critically.

Patricia Scales

I give my students case studies where students have to think. I also give students ethical questions and make them think about all the possible answers and ways you can handle a situation.

Critical thinking skills are useful throughout college and all your life.
