How the library can help you develop professional skills
How have you found the library useful in developing technical, professional, or personal skills? Has there been a particular book or article that you've found useful?
And... shameless plug:
Your school's library can help you to develop professional / teaching skills. Libraries purchase books, ebooks, and databases about teaching. Ask your local librarian for details.
Using the library for professional development is great!
There are several books that I have in my professional library that I refer to on a regular basis. One of them is by Stephen Brookfield called "Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher" and another is by Barbara Gross Davis called "Tools for Teaching" which is a great resource for new and experienced teachers.
Hi Kent,
Good point about how the library can be used to expand one's knowledge base as well as helping one to remain current.

Libraries can be great resources for professional, technical and personal skills. I personally like some of the professional works like "The Chronicle of Higher Education" as a tool for developing my skills. I can learn a great deal about new trends in higher education.
I also really love to send my students to the online library. They are always excited about the quality of information they can get in a professional library. Expanding their horizons beyond "google" is rewarding for me.
Hi Elaine,
Thanks for the shameless plug. Being a lover of libraries and books I agree with you about the need we have to use them as much as possible.

I find the library to be an integral component in both my individual progress as an instructor because the information available augments my own understanding of the subject matter. In this, the year of our lord 2009, the new media technologies make access to information much easier and in turn help me become better as an instructor. Using these resources helps me better understand myself by assessing my own knowledge against existing external bodies of information.
