Hi Casey,
I agree with your approach. The more we can connect the dots between course content and career applications the greater the learning engagement.
Thanks.
Gary
Hi Deanna,
Not sure what you mean by your comment. Can you expand on it some more so I can get the full grasp of your how you approach your classroom in terms of motivating your students.
Thanks.
Gary
Hi Ibrahim,
So true. We set the stage for the level of excitement and enthusiasm that is going to be in the class. So we need to maintain a high level of both each time the class meets if we expect our students to be excited about the class.
Gary
Hi Atiya,
Students like real life accounts because they help them to see relevancy and application to what they are studying. So the more examples you can share with them the more engaged they are going to be.
Gary
I believe the way we can "Motivate" them would be by giving them more activities in class that is related to what they are learning or what they will be learning. This way it will keep them on there feet. We can focus on some more active learning styles such as getting them involved with the discussions and games that pertain to what they are learning.
Teachers have a lot to do with their students' motivational level. A student may arrive in class with a certain degree of motivation. But the teacher's behavior and teaching style, the structure of the course, the nature of the assignments and informal interactions with students all have a large effect on student motivation. We may have heard the utterance, "my students are so unmotivated!" and the good news is that there's a lot that we can do to change that.
I help students become motivated by giving them real like accounts of what they can expect when they start working. I allow them the freedom to ask any questions and voice any concerns. I make lecture fun and am able to get them excited about their competencies by my unique instructional style. I coach them along and show empathy because I was once a student myself. Finally, I let them know the rewards of the practice and that motivates and excites them in itself!
Hi Julie,
Good way to connect the dots for your students from what they are learning to where they will be using some of the content--their licensing exam. Also, you are showing them relevancy and application to what they are learning which helps to keep them engaged.
Gary
I always try to relate to the students the WHY. The courses I teach are directly to prepare students for things they will see in the real world in their new career. Additionally, there are things that they may not experience in their career, but need to know for licensing purpose. They always perk up when they hear the words "this will be on the licensing exam."
I have found that when there is a topic that the students find is boring that I take and applie it to the practical side of the trade there by showing them the importance of the subject and it's hands on practicality.
Hi Nathan,
Good point about Type A's and how they approach a classroom. Being one, I had to work very hard to program into my approach and mindset flexibility. Once I got comfortable with the concept and started applying it life got a lot easier for me. I wish you much teaching success as you incorporate flexibility into each class session.
Gary
I have picked up some good hints about motiviating my students that I hope to try this new term
I agree as well. Not only is it cuurent information but it helps the students apply concepts to real-life situations. As a result, the student is able understand the concept much better.
This is incredibly challenging to Type "A", task-oriented, goal driven folks like me who dislike to be routed off task. But you are correct that we ought to be prepared to adjust and adapt teaching plans on the fly if we are to be successful in the classroom.
i agree it takes everyone to motivate students student.
I agree with you totally. I have found that encouragement is one of the best ways to motivate the student. They need to know that we believe in them as an instructor and that we are their best cheer leader.
I like to motivate my students by giving them real life experience in their field. I like to take them on field trips and I like to have guess speakers come.
Hi Lashawnds,
Good strategy. Students love to hear stories about the field because it helps them make the connection of the course content with their future. Keep the sharing process going and continue to make an impact.
Gary
Hi Lashawnda,
I commend you for your efforts in trying to impact the lives of your students. You are offering them an opportunity to create a future for themselves if they will put forth the effort. Keep up the good work even though it can be frustrating and challenging at times. I teach in a setting much like yours so I can really appreciate your comments.
