Engaging students while teaching technical information

I've found that I can engage students best when teaching extremely technical by always beginning those lessons with an explaination of how the technical information will be useful to them in their future career. What are some other techniques we as teachers can use to engage students when teaching highly technical topics?

Kristy,
Use everyday examples and bring in stories about how this group of atoms got together to accomplish a task. You can make the examples humorous and be dramatic in your story telling. These approaches will engage the students and they will remember the specifics of atom parts or how molecules are made up. This method really worked for me because the students could laugh at the examples, remember the content and see relevance to what they were learning.

I am able to relate to my students by telling them real-life experiences; however, I am having a hard time relating real life experiences when it comes to science and discussing atoms and molecules. Any suggestions?

Paula,
Students as you know like to have real life experiences shared with them and then discussed. This makes the course content that much more real to them. Good strategy to us.

I have been a nurse for 42 years and find that discussing 'real life' situations I actually worked with encourages them to ask more questions which gives them more answers than in the book, which leads to still more questions.

I agree that is a wonderful way to get a class motivated.I loved your response Thank you.

Briefly telling a true-life story always seems to perk up interest in the subject matter.
