Developing as an instructor
I believe in continually developing as an instructor, because our fields are constantly changing. We must stay current with the times.
I agree in continuing to improve as an instructor so that our skills will become broader. Through continuing education we as instructors can stay beneficial towards our students in their growth of education.
Duane,
This will be a great learning opportunity for you as you bring your extensive experience into the classroom and then shape it into a delivery style. Try to observe other instructors and talk with colleagues about how they deliver instruction, be yourself and enjoy leading the learning of your students. Before you know it you will have your style defined and refined and you are on your way as an instructor of merit.

I'm new to being an instructor. Although I do have many years of experience in my field. I'm in the process of developing a style(s).
Jo,
I would set up a professional development plan of my own that would get me the knowledge and experience I want as a professional educator and then see where I could secure those experiences/courses at a cost I can afford. For example our courses at MaxKnowledge cover all aspects of instructional development and theory. So I would take as many MaxKnowledge courses I could. If there were local seminars or workshops offered I would take them and if my local university offered classes at a time I could take them I would enroll in them as well. Combined all of these efforts will help you to develop your instructional expertise to the point that you are the instructor of merit that you want to be.

I am a brand new instructor, what do I do if the college I am teaching at doesn't offer any professional development courses or classes, are there any other resources for instructors?
I am a new instructor at my college and whole heartedly agree with the need for professional development. Professional development as an instructor provides me with new strategies in engaging and motivating students. Updates in technical knowledge is equally as important when teaching in Information Technology due to rapid advancements in that field. I would like to hear how instructors balance these two important development areas.
FRIEDA,
You make a number of good points about the value of professional development. Another one that I enjoy is that through professional development I maintain my interest and engagement in teaching because I am learning something new on a regular basis.

Reginald,
This is an essential part of the professional development for all instructors. This is the only way that their instructional expertise will be expanded and their effectiveness increased.

Continuing education is important to developing as an instructor.
It helps the instructor develop and improve lectures to students.
It engages students when the topic is something new and not an old method or piece of information.
Continuing education for an instructor will increase the amount of information to be shared and consumed by the students.
The instructor develops into a well informed and knowledgeable teacher.
