Lecture to lab skills
In my profession students have to have knowledge on the subject on hand, but also be able to apply it to a hands on setting. It helps them learn how to utilize the content when they use it in a lab setting. This helps with the visual learners, but also my textbooks learners. Both learning groups are covered.
Hi Bruce,
This approach will help you to establish a base line for the students. By having them complete a basic skills exercise you will know where they are at and then can build your instructional delivery and content around the baseline.
The final assessment will show the students how much progress they have made and where they need to concentrate their efforts to fill in any gaps that may exist.

I have taken courses where a lab assessment is conducted first to determine a student's competency level before taking a course. I like this method especially when the same assessment is given at the conclusion of the course so students can see their improvement.
Hi Holly,
Your comments are in support of the idea of the mind (knowledge) and application (tactile) reinforcement of learning. We all know if you immediately use newly acquired knowledge then retention is much higher. Application and relevancy have to be an integral part of our instructional planning.
