The learning environment plays a major role, as it dictates how well students will be able to focus on the content of the course.
Darrren,
This is such a good thing for you to do as you are showing your students the environment in which they will be working. This will ease their transition from school to the real world.

Gerald,
We need to see the learning environment through the eyes of our students. If we do then we can make any necessary adjustments to make the environment supportive for their learning.

Being a massage therapist and massage therapy instructor, I like to make the classroom environment tranquil so the students will begin to reflect outwardly what they are learning to bring to their future clients.
A big role.....if the learning environment is not good, then the students can be distracted. For example, if the there is a loud leaf blower outside, the students are going to focus on that sound, rather than the exam that they are taking.
Doinysius,
This is why we need to see the environment through the eyes of our students and then make adjustments as needed.

Learning enviornoment is critical. To be an effective instructor you must ensure that students are in a conducive learning enviornment, one that fits the needs of the subject to be taught.
Robert,
Good points about how the learning environment impacts the learning of students. We need to see our teaching environment through the eyes of our students so we can adjust the environment if needed to maximize learning for our students.

Robert,
I congratulations on gaining the reputation with the students. This demonstrations your skill and expertise as an educator and learning leader. Keep up the good work.

The learning environment plays an important role in the ability for students to receive and retain information. The student needs to feel safe within their environment in order to be open and receptive to the information being presented. Additionally, the temperature, time of day, duration of sessions, visual stimuli, along with proper use of technology all play a part in how long the student can stay actively engaged with the subject matter. Even if a person is an excellent instructor the learning environment can still have negative effects on the student’s ability to perceive and retain information.
It helps create a positive enviroment!
I'm a mathematics instructor and I have a positive can-do attitude when I come to class. I enjoy the subject which makes it easy to reflect my enthusiasm. I also involve my students by having them solve problems at the whiteboard and explain to the rest of the class their reasoning. As a reward they get "zube bucks" that they can use toward getting a 100 on a homework assignment.
Most of all, I am approachable and never consider a question as "stupid". I am there to help the students reach their goal. A result of this is that students look for me to teach a math class they need to take. It's quite a compliment.
Thomas,
Good alternate plan. Your presence throughout the room is helping to reduce some of the computer distractions.

No master switch to turn off all the computers but one strategy I used to deal with the problem was to walk around the room (front and back) and teach in an interesting enough style to maintain the attention of the students.
Julie,
We need to see the learning environment through the eyes of our students. When we do we can see the adjustments that need to be made to make the setting comfortable and supportive.

It plays an important role because the student needs to feel as comfortable as possible in the classroom so he/she can concentrate on learning.
Laurie,
Talk with your building engineer and see if any adjustments can be made to the temp. If you can't at least you know so you can tell your students that temp regulation is out of your control. This then helps them to see that together you all can find ways to cope with the temp doing things like you suggested like moving about. What I have found is that when students become part of the solution to a problem they are a lot more engaged even if it is something like the temperature.

The learning environment plays an important role in the learning process. If the learning environment is poor, the learning process will be a reflection of that environment.
Your environment impacts your behavior. A classroom that is designed for learning and updated with the latest supportive technology is key in the instructional process. What I have found interesting is how room temperature impacts the student's ability to pay attention. My students are often complaining about temperature regulation - a factor in which I have little to no control over - mostly about it being too cold. When the complaints start I often have the students stand up and move around (i.e. change seats). Any other suggestions?
