I agree. Having a road map for the students is essential. Everyone one involved knows what to expect. Thus, leading to better preparation.
I agree with you. Having a document with all the course expectations, requirements, policies and procedures laid out in an organized fashion should answer most of the students questions about the course on the first day.
Hi Janice,
This is a good point. By answering the more basic questions with the syllabus instructors have more time to focus on specific student questions that come up which helps to personalize the course more for them.

Hi Janice,
I think this is a terrific way of showing students your personal approach to the course while still using the standardized syllabus. You are making it your own this way as well as showing the students the importance you attach to the syllabus. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Gary
Hi Janice,
Good point about how the syllabus can be an effective tool for helping students to understand the course expectations, requirements and policies. By knowing them the students know how they can be successful in the course.
Gary
Hi Debra,
Good point about how the syllabus sets the tone for the class and gives the students a foundation of understanding of how the course is going to unfold. This is so important to get the students settled into the course and reduce their anxiety about course success.
Gary
I like the idea of coping the front of the book and marking chapters that will be used.
It seems when we review a course syllabus a lot of questions the students have are answered.
True. I could not agree with you more. Well said.
Greetings Gary,
The college I work at supplies the syllabus for the course. I personalize the syllabus by giving visuals whenever possible. For instance if a book is being used I show the book and the chapters that will be discussed. I suggest to the student that they "tab" the chapters that concern the current class. I show "tabs" and give ideas where to purchase them.
I think there are many reasons but one could be to create a level playing field as far as expectations for the class.
The syllabus also includes class assignments and how they will be graded. It normally shows the weighted grade for tests/assignments. This is a good reference tool for students to remind them of the number of tests the class will have
I totally agree. It is a great reference tool for the entire class
A well prepared syllabus gives the students an overview of the course. It answers the questions regarding the content of the course and how it applies to their course of study or chosen career.
A Well-prepared syllabus is important so the students know before instruction begins what should be learned or the course objectives, how they will be graded, what assignments they will have and what the expectations of the instructor are. All work that will be required should be on the syllabus.
Hi Cathy,
Do you develop your own syllabus or is it supplied by the college? If it is supplied by the college how do you personalize it to your own teaching style?
Thanks for your input on this.
Gary
Hi Janice,
I agree with you about the introduction of the syllabus. When students understand course policies, requirements, and expectations they get settled into the course much quicker and with a lot less frustration.
Gary
A carefullu constructed syllabus performs important functions not only for the student, but for the instructor as well. The syllabus serves as a contract to ensure that all parties are clear on the expectations and responsibilities associated with the course. A well-designed syllabus can help prevent misunderstandings regarding course goals and objectives as well as grading policies.
Greetings Gary,
I think introducing the syllabus at the start of each class gives the students the expectations of the course as well as an idea of the material they will learn. By reviewing the syllabus we are all on the same page and know the expectations for a successful completion.
