Perscribed Syllabi

I am a new instructor and the courses I am teaching have pre-existing syllabi already in place. There are a few areas where my personal teaching style and the sylabus disagree, and I'm curious as to what I should do to make them sync up. Should I propose to change the syllabi to accord better with how I would like to teach the courses, or should I change my attitude toward the perscribed syllabi and simply follow them?

I just posted a similar topic. I feel that a personal touch is necessary and should make the objectives clearer for the students--since the objectives are in your own words.

Hey Drew,

I totally understand and can most defiantly relate! I have an evening colleague that I work with and we both share the same class and we had come to improvise and teach what the syllabus entails but also but our flares into the labs that we teach. All we have heard from students is nothing but positive. If you have a prescribed syllabi then just put you idea to it to improve it!

Drew,
As a new instructor I would stay with the standardized syllabus because as a newbie you don't want to be seen by administrators as a person that wants to redo what they have in place (needed or not). So look at the syllabus and then see where you can personalize the instructional approach to support your teaching style. We use a standardized syllabus in my college but it only prescribes the policies, requirements and expectations of the course. Within those boundaries I can personalize how I cover the material, assign the readings, etc.. As you gain more confidence in with your supervisor you can demonstrate how you would like to cover the material and I think you will see that they will support you within the confines of the standardized syllabus.
