Utilizing a well prepared syllabus is crucial to the success of the student in the course. It not only states what is expected of the student but what is expected of the professor. I feel that a student has the right to be able to map out their term/semester. Some student are taking 4 to 5 classes at one time and it is very difficult, keeping to time management is very important and having a well-prepared guide helps them fit all of the work in and learn many different subjects at the same time.

This helps to define a course. Without a proper syllabus students will not know what to expect in a course.

The syllabus is back bone of the material your using in the class.

If you don't have a clear vision of where you are going, and a way to share that with the students, everyone will become lost in the mists of ignorance.

A well-prepared syllabus will help instructors avoid misunderstandings with students regarding requirements and grades.
Also, a good syllabus will keep students and the instructor stay "on-track". Oftentimes the amount of material is very time-restrictive. It will help assure that the planned and required material and information is delivered in the available time period.
Also, sometimes classroom discussions venture down "rabbit holes" and get the class off track. The syllabus can help guide and redirect the discussion to make sure class time is used most productively.

The syllabus is what sets the tempo for the entire course. If it is well prepared the students know exactly what is going to be covered and they are going to learn. The syllabus lets the students know exaclty what is expected of them.

Sets the climate in the class
Includes class policies, assignments and deadlines. Gives the course organization and structure

I like to be organized walking into the first day of class. My syllabus helps me to stay on track and deliver the neccesay information my students need.

It is important to have a well prepared syllabus so that students understand the classroom rules and expectations for the course. Students need to know how they will be graded, the outline of the course instructional plan and what they are expected to learn at the completion of the course.

Students need to be well informed about the cotent of the courses they are taking and a well written syllabus should give a stdent the information needed.

Diane,
Students have a tendency to not listen as accurately as they should and/or dismiss the information they have been given in relation to assignments and due dates. As you say a well prepared syllabus eliminates that problem because the students have the syllabus in their hands and/or online.
Gary

It lets the student know what to expect during the course. it minimizes misunderstandings and confusion, and it clearly outlines expectations.

A well-prepared syllabus answers many questions that a student may have about a course. It also gives them an idea of what the expectations for the course are and when assignments are due. I think this is important, so that students have a way of pacing themselves. There can be no excuses that he/she did not have time to complete an assignment.

Helps keep me focused on the process.

using a well prepared syllabus, will give you a guideline of what you need to teach.
