The Learning Environment Effect
What role does the learning environment play in the instructional process?
Roberta,
Right you are and this is why we need to see our learning environments through the eyes of our students. This way we can make adjustments if needed.

It's very important. If the student is not comfortable in the classroom/lab they will not be able to focus on the content being taught.
Tricia,
Yes, this is a critical part of the total instructional planning effort.

I think its very important considering that could make or break if a student is willing and open to learning. Its the first step.
Harrison,
Right you are. A poor learning environment really influences students engagement and focus. Being to cold/hot and in a classroom or lab that does not have supportive technology greatly increases the potential for dropouts.

I believe it plays a huge part because if the students are being distracted by whats going on around them and are uncomfortable by thier surroundings, they may have a hard time learning.
If not the most important, one the most important factors is the learning environment. Instructing adult learners I have learned that very quickly.
SHIVA,
I agree and we need to see the environment through the eyes of our students. When we do we will work to make sure we have a clean safe and comfortable place to teach and they learn.

Diana,
Right you are. This is an important part of the total interactive instructional process for both instructor and students.

This environment is where the student will get his/her instruction, it plays a pivotal role. I have worked in classrooms that have been either too hot or too cold, have had bad smells from wet carpet and labs with poor supplies. A poor environment is at the very least distracting, at the worst unsafe. Environment I believe also refers to the atmosphere or tone set by the instructor
I believe that expectations in the classroom go both ways. It is imperative that the instructor inform the students of the expectations that are expected; however, it is just at imperative that the instructor acknowledge that there are also unspoken expectations from the students regarding their classroom expectations of the instructor.
the learning environment is crucial, the students need to feel comfortable in it to make learning easy.
Eboni,
What are some way you have found the environment to influence students ability to focus?

Joseph,
So true. We need to see the learning environment as our students see it. When we do then we will make sure the environment is prepared, comfortable and supportive for learning.

The enviroment plats a major role in an adult student's ability to focus.
It plays a very significant role in the process. If the surroundings do not match the course content, it is more difficult for the student to immerse themselves into the content.
Tia,
What do you do to make sure your classroom/lab is set up in a way that promotes a positive experience for your students?
Gary

I think it plays a key role in setting the tone on how the students will learn. If the class looks a mess when the students come to class for the first day, they will have low expectation. On the other hand if it is set up neat and in order the will have a high expectation for the class.
Elements such as lighting, temperature, room cleanliness and seating arrangements effect a student's affect or mood and may effect their learning capacity. Learning in a classroom necessitates a comfortable classroom.
