differences

I have yet to see any 2 classes be alike. I have learned that I have to modify each learning session according to the type of students that I have. This helps the students to be successful in the classroom. Also Identifying learning styles can help me plan the course.

Cappriccieo,
This is a fun part of being a teacher. We get to meet and work with students with such diverse backgrounds. It is for sure that teaching is not boring and no two days are ever the same.

I definitely enjoy the diversity as well. In fact, I have learned a lot from my students as a result. I start each class with current news articles selected by each student. It is always interesting to hear their perspectives and asses how they see the world.

Jane,
I do to since I know my students are there because they want to be. Even though they are tired they are dedicated. I just have to work hard to keep them focused since once they sit down they are basically done so I have to get the blood pumping and their bodies moving.

I personally enjoy the diversity, this helps with a night class. It has a different vibe but it also helps with instruction for my day class.

Sharon,
I face this challenge as well because students are admitted to my courses with a wide range of reading and comprehension levels and yet the college expects them all to leave the courses with the same knowledge and competencies. This is not possible but I do work hard at getting to know the skill levels of my students just as you mention that you do so we can together work on growing the students and their knowledge of the key concepts of the course content.

I have also learned that I have to identify the current skill level of each individual. For example, everyone reads at a different level and writes at a different level. This can be quite a challenge in Gen Ed courses.

Kelley,
This past session I taught three sections of the same course and each section was very different. You are right about how each group of students are unique. I delivered the course content in a number of different ways to meet the needs of each section. If I had used the same delivery for each section my students would not have been as happy nor would their learning been at the level it was.
