Effective learning environment

I always strive to create an air of comfort and relaxed discussion about course content in my classroom. I find that presenting the material in a more relaxed, discussionary manner yields greater student results.

James,
Tough situation. I would start with a soft approach in chatting with him and say something along the line "you may not be aware of how sound carries in this building and between walls. Was wondering if we together could explore how to reach a mutual understanding on how we can work together where the noise from our classes are not too disturbing to our students?" With this approach I think you will be able to work out a situation where both classes of students can hear and learn effectively.

the lecture component of the class I inherited on short notice is in a room that must have the unique combination of paper thin walls and a very exuberant lecturer from a different department (and college) next door . I struggle with how best to discuss this with him as I am a naturally non-confrontational person but feel I really must do something as it is a tremendous distraction. I only hope it as been less so for the students than for me thus far.

Reginald,
This type of environment is important for students to learn in and be a part of. You are showing the human factor in your teaching with this approach and helping your students to get settled in and ready for learning.
