first meeting
I have learned to set the expectations on the first day and to set the bar high. I feel that it is easier to ease up than it is to get them under control later. If the students know what is expected than they will most likely be successful.
First meeting is very important and get to know the student and create a comfortable atmosphere as well to set goal for the course.

This is the value of the first meeting. The students get to see that they have a dedicated professional that is going to help them move closer to their career goals if they are willing to put forth the effort.

I agree with this statement. It is not meant to scare them but show the students that education is important and the standards are high at this level of education.

I think this is how you should start a course. It is almost impossible to raise the standards after the course has gotten underway. By setting them high and sharing these standards with your students right from the beginning you have shaped their expectations in terms of course requirements.
