Gives students a positive foundation to learn on.

A positive first impression when starting a new class is important because:

- It puts the student's mind at ease
- It gets the students excited about the class
- It could make the student eager about attending class

All and all the student has a more positive vibe about the class and is excited to see what has to come regarding said class.

The students will attend the class after a positive first impression.

This is a very good idea!

The first impression can set the tone for the whole quarter. It is the least pressured classroom meeting, but possibly one of the most important.
You are setting the tone for the students to bond and determine how you will fit in with the class.

A positive first impression sets the tone for the class. It can alleviate student anxiety greatly to meet an instructor that seems to be confident, approachable, friendly, and knowledgeable. Conversely, if the first impression conveyed is an instructor that is rushed, aloof, etc., this can cause serious concerns with the student.

Monica,
Try doing introductions and an ice breaker or two so the students can get settled into the course. After they have shared their backgrounds with each other and have had a little fun with the ice breakers it will be easier to introduce the syllabus and the rules. By then they will be settled enough for them to see the rule sharing is connected to course success.

It is hard to make a positive first impression when you have to set the rules for first time in a classroom.

AMANDA,
The first impression sets the tone for the class so we need to plan carefully and make the first session a rewarding, engaging and fun session. If we do this then it is a building process from there throughout the rest of the course.

It is very important to have a positive first impressiion you meet your new class. You want your new students to be excited about your class.

Pixie,
Your last sentence says it all. If we are not passionate about our field and enthusiastic about teaching it is for sure our students will not be excited about being in the class.

I think that making a positive first impression sets the tone for the entire class. It is very important to have a positive attitude so that in turn you can hope to receive the same from your students. If you are negative, how can you expect them to be positive.

A positive first impression is important when starting a new class because this is how the student will evaluate the professor.

Brandy,
Right you are and something every instructor needs to remember as he or she preps for the first class meeting.

NaKeta,
Yes it is. The first impression sets the tone for the class and shows the students what they can expect in the class sessions to come. This makes them a lot more comfortable as they get settled in.

The first impression is generally the last. When the students have a clear understanding of your expectations, they will succeed.

It is important to create a positive first impression to develop and maintain respect as a positive influence and leader.

Doreen,
Right you are about first impressions. They are big in terms of setting the tone for a new class. We need to be prepared and ready for the class so the students see us as confident learning leaders that will help them to be successful in the course if they are willing to put forth the effort.

first impressions are remembered throughout the class. you can try to regain a positive impression, it is very hard to change someone's mind when then already have a first impression of you.
