Hi Jerry,
I am sure your students really enjoyed learning this information about HIPAA and could see the application of their knowledge to their career field. This is making it real.
Gary

Everyone gets the same assignment and I walk aroud the kitchen to work with each student individually based on their skill level.

It is important to know students current backgroud/experiences. For example, one class had a huge number of students in the health care field and were aware of HIPAA but not it origin or why the organization they worked in had a major responsibilty with regard to implementation. Emphasis was placed on addressing the HIPAA issue and responses were very postitive regarding their work environment and concern. very rewarding

Whenever possible I try to relate the material we are covering to a real situation I have experienced in the business world. I also try to relate to current events in the business world. This helps students see the need to understand the concepts and practical application of what we are studying, and shows them that these concepts and applications are relevant to what they will encounter as they enter their chosen profession.

When preparing for a class I like to sit in the room in a student's chair that is not in the main line of vision. Then I think "What can I do to get the attention of this student." Lecture and demonstrations are, indeed, a performance and must be planned to presented with flair.

I also find out which programs my students are in. For some group projects I have them break by program. The projects involve some type of synthesis and presentation back to the class. During that time I have them describe how they would use the material or information in their chosen profession.

My most successful strategy is applying the content of the course to events or issues that are happening in the "news of the day". Nearly everyone in the class is aware of what is going on in the business world and when we apply the course material to what they hear about on the news, it sinks deeper into their understanding and they are more interested.

sounds like a great plan and all sttudents will be apart of the whole.

great point, pre thought before motion gives a student a purpose of action.

Hi Justin,
You are doing a great job of making the connection between knowledge and application with your method. The students can see how through reading they can acquire the knowledge needed to perform the procedures required of the field.

Hi David,
A great piano master was told one day by a young student "I wish I could play like you." The master replied "no you don't and the reason why is that you don't want to work that hard to be this good." I think this is a good point, if the effort is put forth the skill will come. There is natural talent yes and that should be used when and where possible but motivation and drive can contribute greatly if the student keeps practicing and trying.

During the teaching cycle ther are several reading assignments tha the students must complete in order to acquire information thatis relivent to demonstrations and the resultant activities in the lab. Reading is not the favorite activity for our students so I make it a part of demonstration that the students use the knowledge that acquire through the reading assignment to help me execute the demonstration. While the demonstration takes place I elaborate on the subject material and technique being used. In the process I solicite input from the group on practical applications of the material being presented. I believe that this process gives ownership of the ideas to the students and makes the professional application more relevent and realistic.

Thanks Gary.

I try to make the course content relevant to the student needs based on the information I get from them at the beginning of the quarter/semester. I have the students read a little out loud. That helps me figure out of students are going to have trouble with their reading assignments. Should that be the case, I am always sure to talk about the reading assignment, highlight important points I want them to read, etc. It helps the students focus a little more.

I try hard to provide the widest variety of methods.

great point ,it has been said that 10,000 hours not talent will make you a master at anything.

Building blocks are the foudation. You can ply an instrument ,you can play great music knowing the scales.

Hi David,
This is why the foundation is so important because the students need to develop an accurate vision of their field and the skills needed to be successful within it.

Hi Justin,
Good point about understanding the relationships between the various components of an technique. The Whys of the different demonstrations will be retained in the minds of the students for a much longer period of time using this format.
Gary

great point,we all have a history and students are starting to tell there story.
