Sorry with the above post listing only the link included in the 103 course. The article on the Japan method I will try to find again....I did not save it, but did make a copy. I will try to find it and share it.
Susan, In reply to your request, http://www.garlikov.com/Soc_Meth.html the link is included at the end of the Unit 2 section - Socratic method of asking questions...discusses using questions in a math exercise with elementary students.
I just loved the example of teaching elementary students binary arithmetic only by asking them questions!! It reminded me of an article I read several months ago that indicated students in Japan excell in math - perhaps it is because math in Japan is taught in language, not by numbers. Perhaps the Socratic method- Japan style?
I do believe in immersion, but it does require a few folks more time than others to 'pick up' the techniques of the languages. Something I found that is interesting for many subjects area are flash cards that can be developed online... http://www.flashcardexchange.com/tag/Portuguese FYI
Is there a 'best' way to learn a foreign language regardless of learning style? "Rosetta Stone" has been mentioned but is that not auditory?...and are there better or a combination of ways to learn the language?

thank you and yes, students do respond - and in fact contact me to make sure they have not 'missed' any emails, if it appears there is a 'void' between time of messages.

I have set up a "broadcast" email system utilized for all enrolled students in our disciplne to inform them of changes in the field, potential job opporltunities, legislation, etc. It is 'special'..just for them - to keep the student updated, current, and let them know they are important. They are also aware of our discipline blog...but the email is designed to go to them -- with only their name on the email.

intros create a comfort zone and provide an opportunity for the student to not only be part of ....but have 'ownership' in the success of the class

It appears to be more difficult to find appropriate updated textbooks for a few topical areas. Textbook reps continuallyl ask, "would you be willing to author a new text?"
