Hi Chiarina,
This is a key point that students need to pick up during their training. They have to "read" the culture of the work site and then decide how they will work within it. This is a major part of their career development.
Gary
I think discussing some of my experiences and using them as examples of what we are learning, makes the content more real and they can see how the information we are discussing can be implemented to reality. This has been one of the most useful tools I have, discussing the correct and incorrect things I have seen or done also makes me seem more realy to them.
I agree with this since each institution usually has its own culture. What one might feel comfortable doing in one sector may not be the case in another. RN students learn right away that in one hospital, the culture changes from unit to unit. There are policies and procedures to adhere to, but different styles may need to be applied on a case by case basis. Flexibility is key.
Hi Shlomo,
Right on with your assessment of what we need to be doing in are career college classrooms. We have to reflect the industry/business standards in our expectations as we are training our students to be successful in these career areas.
Gary
They also need to know that they may have to try numerous ways until they find "their" way. Giving many different styles that happen in the field will also better prepare them for when they join the industry of their choice.
After 20 years in corporate America, it is invaluable to relate what we do in class with the "real" world...give the course more credibility.
Hi Humberto,
Right you are about earning respect with the skills and experience you bring to the classroom. Your students see you as someone that has done and is willing to share it.
Gary
i find that is the most helpfull tool to cath the student attention and learn the clas subject and how is applied in the "field". this life expiriences also help establish a conection that you have proven yourself in the "field" and that will earn their respect to you
Hi Fred,
This is what makes it "real" for your students. They know you know how it really is out there. What do your students find most interesting about your experiences when you share them? Is it the locations, responsibilities, experiences, challenges, etc.?
Gary
I always bring to the table my own experience to create a sense of what they are about to experience.
Hi Beth,
I like your approach about their style of managing will not happen overnight. In our instant culture it seems that everyone thinks that this is the way things are. They don't want to spend the time in rank learning all the skills it takes to be that leader and problem solver. The reason you are the teacher is because you have years of experience and you are sharing that with the students. They need to see the connection between life experiences and their future.
