Me to. I share with them what my expectations are and ask if there are any questions. Then I ask them for what there expectations are and answer questions as we go along.

Katrina,
You are on the right track with the effort you are putting forth. Keep up the good work and you will soon see the impact you have on the lives of your students.

I am a new instructor and have had the opportunity this week to lecture and spend time teaching in the lab setting as well. I have introduced myself, talked about my experience, answered questions, and have thoroughly enjoyed the process thus far. I have repeatedly told my students that I welcome questions and that I would appreciate them letting me know if there is something they don't understand or needs clarification. I try to bring in different experiences that relate to the topics being discussed and feel like they are beginning to trust my abilities as a Surgical Technologist and instructor. I will continue to work hard to be prepared for each lesson and be successful in my new career!

Frederick,
This is such a valuable resource for your students. Many as you know lack or have forgotten their study skills. This resource helps them to come to speed as a college student.

At the College where I teach, we have Learning Labs that are designed to help students with their Writing or Math skills. At the start of term, I try to get someone from these labs to come and introduce their lab, and to discuss the many resources that they have to offer. In particular, the speakers will usually discuss the importance of good study habits, and of how their lab can help students to achieve those habits. In this way, I hope to get people off on the right foot, so that they will be able to keep up with the requirements of the course.

Students need to get involved and be interested in what they are learning. I like to engage them and ask questions during a training session. I prefer immediate feedback to make sure they are catching on while we are still covering the particular lesson.

Being organized, clearly staing and establishing understanding of the syllabus and leaving no question where the student should be and what they will be doing.

I agree, thats what I do with my students also

Gayle,
They keep students focused because they never know when they might occur, thus the name pop quiz but also they give you feedback on student status just as you mentioned.

Christopher,
Great use of technology to reduce student anxiety as well as letting them know support is there if they will ask for it.

I used to hate pop quizzes when I was in high school but now believe that they are a very useful tool in determining where your students are.
Many times, they will have no questions and then not do so well on a test. This is frustrating and when you ask them questions, they seem to have an understanding. Yea, I think pop quizzes are the way to go!

I have found some students dont want to say in front of the their fellow students they dont understand (math mostly)...I ask them to txt me in class and I will give them them extra attention right away or I will txt them back to meet with me after of before the next class.

I put my students into real world situations. By using real-time labs and examples, I can establish my expectaions clearly

Billie,
What are some ways you have found to be effective in sharing your expectations with your students? Thanks for sharing your ideas on this.

If you do not make your expectations clear it will only confuse your students.

Demonstration and Class presentaton I use to make sure student understand the subject. And it helps them to understand.

Karen,
Clear concise communication reduces student frustration and questioning because they know the expectations of the course. This way the students can focus on being successful rather than spending time trying to figure out what the instructor wants.

Susana,
This way you know they have cognitively internalized the required procedures and are ready to move to the next phase.

Communication is the most important method of letting your students know what you expect of them. Be upfront with them. On the first day give them what you expect of them and you shouldnt have any issues.

I ask them to verbally state the step-by-step procedure before performing the activity.
