Teaching styles
Using a variety of delivey methods not only helps the students with the course you're teaching but it also keeps them engaged and excited about learning. Being able to accomodate the forms of learning in my opinion, gains appreciation from the students!
Fortunately for myself my students will be reproducing the techniques that they have learned and applying them in a clinical forum. I am sure I will be demonstrating as well and then the students will be giving a return demonstration to me with their patients. As a clinical nursing instructor there will be some lecture but mostly demonstration which I feel is the most important teaching forum for nursing students.
That sounds like a fun way to do an excercise in writing. I am looking for short assignments to have students write. I may try something like this. Thanks!
One style that I have used and the students seem to enjoy, I show a video clip of the material that was covered in class and I have them write down what they heard or saw relating to the topic. Afterwards, we discuss the video and how they could have done something differently or if it was the only way to do it.
True - night students can be more challenging at times since they typically have worked a full day. The challenge is to keep the class engaging.
I agree! I think that using different teaching styles not only helps to keep the student engaged, but it also helps the instructor from being bored in class! I like to try different things. I am very visual, so alot of times I end up leaning toward that way of teaching. I have been trying to incorporate all kinds of learning styles into my instructing. It's been fun!
Hi Lisa,
What are some of the strategies that you use to keep your night students engaged?
Gary
When teaching a night class you definitely have to switch up the activites and lectures. Most of these students have worked all day so keeping their attention is one of the goals
This is where knowing your student body is paramount. It also helps for administration to properly pair instructors with the students to get the right "fit." Though the content of the same course will be consistent, teaching styles vary as do groups of students.
Hi Camilla,
Way to go in being creative in your approach to teaching. The different methods really help to engage the students and keep them focused on their success in the course.
Gary
I am a PD and still end up teaching 20 hours a week. It is a streach but you can find time to do puzzles (crosswords are free online) and to review by doing games. Lecturing for an hour is just too boring for the instructor so you know that the students are bored! Videos can sometimes be borrowed from the local library and you can usually access them online and get them sent to the closest one. Use your imagination it is your field of expertise. I teach pi by using yarn and christmas tins, it really works!
I would actually love to teach in different styles but I find it difficult to arrange videos/groups. Because of time restraints and access to supplies.
I agree. Day and Night students are very different.
I completely agree. Instructional style is not one style fits all. We need to know the students. Full time day students are different from adult learners in the evening classes. Various styles should be used appropriately.
