The first impression is the most important. on that first day the students will make their opinion of who you are, so it is important to be well prepared, know the lecture and be familiar with the topics that need to be covered.

I think it helps the student to know that you were once in the chair and you know and understand how it feels to take on something new and that your main objective is really to help them and deliver the information so they understand.

It is important to let students know your professional background and how the subject material helps your career. But, it is equally important for the student to express their expectation of what the plan to get from the class and how it will help them in their future career.

it lets the student know you are excited to be there and to be able to educate tham and give them a chance at a career. They feel the energy and want to stay focused and complete their courses.

Positive first impression is important because it can conveys what you know on the subject area. It helps also the students believe and trust in you. Thus helping them to be more focus on course topic

To be approachable and encouraging from the start helps put the student at ease when they have questions.

The first impression does save or sink you. The students want someone to give them gentle direction. If you are not prepared they pick up on it and it can change the way the class will go for that term.Peg Rapai

Hi Peggy,
Thank you for this good advice for how to start a new class off in the right direction. Be clear, specific, organized and ready to present and you will have laid the foundation for making a good first impression on the students.
Gary

Trust this is the reason you want to make that first impression a good one. The Student needs to trust you and respect you before they are going to sit in your class. I find that saying what I expect from the students is very rewarding.PegRapai

It absolutely sets the tone for the class. Positive first impression puts the class and ease and comforts them in knowing you are in charge and competent.

A positive first impression is important, because it leads to your credibility as an insturctor, mentor, and leader.

Like the old saying "you only have one chance for a first impression." I think it is extremely important to get the class off to a good start with a positive first impression. People remember first's and last's they tend to forget the middle.

I could not agree with you more. Good post

A positive first impression on the first day of class is good because it lets the student's know how you expect them to be. You are there role model-they should be able to look up to you. If you don't have a good first impression then the student's won't take you as serious.

It is the time you can make a positive bond, and show you are both human and an instructor.

FIRST IMPRESSION ARE VERY IMPORTANT IT MAKES THE STUDENTS FEEL IF YOU CAN DO SO CAN THEY BE ON TIME, HAVE THEIR ASSIGNMENT READY AND LISTEN TO THEM MAKE THEM FEEL THAT YOU DO CARE ABOUT THEIR EDUCATION

It sets the standard for professionalism and tone of the class. Being too "friendly" or unorganized could allow for the class to walk all over you during the semester.

Because this gives the student perspective into who is teaching them. It lets them know right away that your are the authority when it comes o what they are learning and that they can trust your teaching and follow you.

A positive first impression can go a long in establishing the instructor as "human" and not simply some ogre impressed with him/herself and the number of degrees he/she has. Coming to college is an anxiety-ridden experience for a number of students, especially those who have been out of school for a number of years. The impression that the instructor is competent, fair, and human can certainly quell some of those anxieties.

Because when the students see your confidence, they feel more at ease. If the students feel that you know what you are doing, then they know that you have a lot to teach them and feel better about the decision to go back to school.
