A positive first impression allows the instructor to set the tone for the class and allows the students to be more engaged in the learning experience.

First impressions set the tone for the intire class, if you present yourself as aproachable then your students will be more apt to ask the questions that they might have to give them a better understanding of the course material.

being prepared review and pratice the content we don't get paid for it but it is part of teaching

It's hard for people to break their first impressions. Also, if a student is confused and then doesn't get that confusion addressed, then it can get in their way of learning.

A positive first impression is important because they are the first judgments students will have of you.

A positive first impression is important in order to develop rapport and gain the students' trust in you as an instructor. Going forward in the class you will find the students are more likely to follow your lead.

The first impression is very important as the students will be judging you, and this happens quickly! Once this is done, changing that impression takes a long time an alot of effort. Even the small details are very important. You must have a good first impression to set in the student's mind what type of an instructor you are, and that you are knowledgeable of the subject and you are approachable. Alot for the first 10 minutes in a new class!

You want to make a positive first impression because it will set the tone for the rest of your session. Students will come to you with questions or concerns about the material if they feel the have a good rapport with you which means they will have a good learning enviroment.

I think making a positive first impression sets the tone for the course. Students whether they're in their 20's or in their 50's or even older require validity in their choice for going back to school and when the instructor provides that confirmation about his or her impression then the student wants to be there and wants to learn.

Making a positive first impression with my students helps them to see me as a professional within my field. In addition, I set the standard that they should follow. Since I teach upper level courses which lead them to a internship placement; I let them know that I will treat them just as if they are professionals working in the field and I expect them to hold themselves to that higher standard.

I think positive impressions are very important with your first class. If you start out positive i feel the class will remain positive.

Hi Regina,
Approach your first class with the idea that you are going to use your best human relations skills and common sense and you will be fine.
I wish you much success in your teaching career.

As a new instructor, this particular course helped to give me good ideas on how to start the class off correctly. I look forward to implementing the ideas mentioned in the course and, the forums, when I start my first class.

Hi Nelson,
Well said. This perspective is so important when it comes to keeping the students focused on the outcomes. You and they are comfortable with each other so you are all heading in the right direction.

Whenever an instructor is starting a new class the first impression is always the on the students will remember. The first impression allows the instructor to begin to gain a level of respect from the students. When students see that the instuctor is prepared the students will see that they need to be prepared when class starts.

A first impression sets the tone of the course and is one way to develop rapport with the students.

I teach at a small school and will have many of the same students next quarter. When starting the new quarter I am aware that in a certain sense I have another chance to make a first impression. We are all changing all the time and hopefully improving. It is OK to share with the students that something didn't go as planned last quarter and this time the following correction is being implemented: your instructor will be reasonable (or whatever correction applies at the time). Then ask the students what they hope to do better this time around.

Hi Denise,
So important and so true!
Gary

A positive first impression on the first day of class make the students respect you more. That is why you need to be dress properly and be well prepared.

The first impression sets the standard for the remainder of the course and allows the students to gain a sense of trust in the instructor from the beginning.
