Because it creates a positive image about you in the mind of your students for ever.
First impressions are important because sets the tone for teaching and learning if the students start with a certain level of trust and respect for the instructor and their knowledge of the subject a lot can be accomplished.
Hi Charisma,
So much easier to set a positive tone rather than trying to dig out of a back situation. Good point on making a positive first impression.
Gary
The first impression sets the tone for the rest of the class. It determines if the students will respect you, like you, learn from you, etc.
The first impression will set the tone for the class. When you begin with a new class it is like teaching for the first time. So learn from your mistakes and be as prepared as you can be. I always go in with a goal of wanting my students to look forward to the next class, and if you can gain that interest from day one, it's easier to maintain it.
Toni,
I agree. Sometimes students enter the required courses I teach filled with apprehension and misconceptions about me because of remarks and stories told by former students. It can take several class sessions before they readjust their impression, despite what I do in the first class.
This is my question as well. I have found one of the distinct disadvantages of an online course such as this versus a traditional "live" setting (such as at a conference) to be that such suggestions aren't shared effectively.
Making a first impression is important because it sets the stage for the entire length of the class. If students get a poor first impression it is almost impossible to change their perception of you as an instructor. Therefore, being a model, managing your class and motivating your students is important starting the first day of class.
Most people tend to paint a picture of you from your first impression the way you speak the way you present yourself first impressions are very important. You always want to be positive and professional with a caring attitude.
Hi Amy,
You sure do want them to have that impression. This is why you need to bring your A game to the class and let the students know you respect them and that you are going to help them be successful if they will put forth the effort.
Gary
It will be the first time your students are meeting you and you want them to have the impression they can depend upon you for teaching them what they need to succeed in their chosen profession.
Hi Edwardo,
I agree. It is so much easier to go forward in a positive way than trying to dig out of a negative hole.

I believe a positive fist impression to start with students can and will go a long way in class and toward their teaching in wanting to learn.
Hi Crystal,
Good point. Make that good first impression so you won't have to dig yourself out of a hole with the students. Many instructors don't follow this advice and as a result they never really get in sequence with their students.
Gary
It is important for positive first impression becuase this would be where you are judged good or for bad. Firt impression can make you or break you. If you want them to think and know you as a great person you have to give them that kind of impression.
A positive first impression is important when starting a new class because it sets the foundation for the class. The first impression is the last impression. You want to let the students know that you mean business as well as what you expect of them, what you will tolerate and what you will not tolerate. Through the first impression you want to make sure that you are taken serious and that your first impression has a positive outcome.
Making the first impression is how the course will run. I compare it to laying the first piece of tile if done correct the floor turns out good. If the first piece is wrong the rest of the tiles will follow the room turns out bad. Students are the same following the teacher is the first tile being followed. The teacher needs to be prepared on the subject, learn the students names show that you care.
Students know that they have a prepared instructor thus instructors will gain the respect and attention from them.
Hi Melissa,
Good point and one we instructors all need to keep in mind when we approach a new class. Thanks for sharing this point with us.
Gary
I think it's good to make a good first impression because students attitutes will be based on the first day of meeting the instructor. If the instructor is brass and unapproachable, the students will be uncomfortable
