I use questions as well just out of the blue to keep the students on their toes a random question that I prepared prior to lecture I pick each student at different times during the lecture.

The more of these the better because physical objects or examples help to connect the cognitive aspects of the course to the brains of students through them visually seeing what they are studying.

If applicable, having physical products to show examples of what the end result should look like and how it should operate properly, then have the students replicate it.
