Learning Styles
I have a very hands on program that I teach in, so I find it a little challenging to apply information to my learning styles that prefer it auditory vs. hands-on. I tend to structore my classes in a very lecture and lab orientation to accustom to both learning styles. For different learning styles in the classroom, I have also found it valuable to have the diffences in the learning styles because it gives students a different perspective on things. What is an example how you incorporate auditory vs. hands-on learning into your classrooms?
I have also brought in games like jeopardy to get the students involved. They all write a set number of questions and work in teams. They get really involved and a great review tool as well.
Hi Holly - Thanks for your post to the forum. From what you have described, you already are teaching to the auditory and hands-on styles. You might want to add some visuals like film clips from You Tube or brief Power Points to add to your lectures. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Jaceita- Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree - we sometimes need to go out of our "comfort zones" when we make the effort to teach to the learning styles of our students. However, after almost 30 years of teaching I can attest that it definitely worth it! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Joe I agree that incorperating diffrent learning styles to fit the student needs is very important. I do agree tht sometimes it can be difficult to do especially when youmay be used to one style of instructing. Creating a diffrent enviornment can also help. I aways try to reseach a learning style before I try it there are some really good websites out there that can help.
Holly,
You make some valid points in reference to learning styles. I try to incorporate many different methods of presenting material as possible. In this way, I often find that students are more engaged in the course material. In addition, this method often creates discussions among students that lead to self-discovery.
