Hi Tiffany - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, the more info we have about our students' learning styles, the better we can prepare lessons that will reach them. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Audrey - Thanks for your post to the forum. How great to have advance knowledge of your students' learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
It is helpful to know the learning styles of your students so that you can make the most of your time with them. You want to mix up your teaching styles so that each student is receiving information in a way that works for them. Obviously you can't always do this, but it makes the students feel more confident if they are learning in their style. This helps me be an effective instructor by letting me know the different styles. If I have more visual learners in my class, I might use more visual aids with my lecture. It makes it easier to tailor my teaching to my classes learning.
Just a general observation about over all cultural learning styles as a whole. Would be interested in others opinion on the topic.
It is interesting to realize that the "general" learning style changes over time. If think back to beginning of time, most learning was kinsthetic, watch how to do something and then demonstrated you could. Pre-printing learning was mostly auditory, listening to others who had memorized stories, information, etc. When printed books were available, for the most part learning shifted to a more written style. With the impact of television and other forms, visual learning has become the norm, and now with so much interactive games and resources, the concept of kinsthetic learning is becoming the preferred "general" learning. So perhaps there is a cycle for "society's preferred method.
If you look at the change in magazines and newspapers over the last few years to much more graphic/visual rather than the printed word, can see the change. With computer interaction, and moving more towards the kinestheic learning, even these changes in such resources can not really save them from their downfall.
assessing the diverse learning styles is key to fascilitating an active engaging course. respecting the differences keeps student's more engaged and focused
when you acommidate your students you will find that thet will pick up on your technique and they will let you know how you work well for them to learn
We are starting to do standardized testing (ATI) to determine student learning styles. Having this information in advance allows both the instructor and the student to work together to find ways to learn that will enhance the student's success.
It is important to know students learning styles so we can adapt our teaching styles in order to foster the greatest academic achievement within our students. As instructors, we should do our best to practice different teaching styles to accompany diverse learning styles. We should incorporate styles that accommodate kinesthetic, auditory, visual, and other types of learners.
Knowing the learning styles of the students will help instructors pick the method of delivery of the course contents effectively.
Hi George - Thanks for sharing a great summary of the benefits of teaching to the learning styles!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
The instructor formulates a more comprehensive and effective presentation. As stated in the course and instructor would want to be able to reach all the students at one point or another during the lecture / presentation. Knowing learning styles helps the instructor create valuable learning opportunities and also to potentially cross styles for the different learners exposing them to potentially different modes of thinking, as well as, giving information in a more rounded form. We are effective instructors only when our students have learned not because they are present.
That's excellent, Lindsay! Best wishes - Susan
I give thelearning style test at the beginning of each new class, as most students do not know what type of learner they are or, they think they are a type that they are not. Giving the test at the beginning to the class alows me to kno what style to use during instruction as well as aids the students in their study habbits, if they know what type of learner they are, they will know ho to study and improve their grades.
I need to know the learning styles of my students so that I can construct my lesson to meet their individual needs and that the greater number of students experience learning at all times.
I believe we should always get to know our students learning styles. This will help us know how to gear our lessons. Not all students learn in the same way but they must learn to adapt to new ways of learning as well and instructors need to learn new ways of teaching rather then the traditional lecture.
Knowing the learning style of your student is very important. It will help you determine how to teach them. It will lessen the stress for you and the student.
The more you know about your students the more that you can keep them engaged in the learning experience.
You will be more competent as an instructor having the ability to teach all of your students.
I think it is important to present the material in a variety of formats because not only does it meet the learning style needs of the students but is also helps make the class more interesting to all of the students.
you as an instructor can allow your students to learn the way thet do best by knowing how they learn the material
