Personal experience
I find it very engaging to share industry experience and real world situations to keep students intrigued.
Hi Mark- Thanks for your post to the forum. Making what your students are learning relevant to their own experience and aspirations is so important - excellent !! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I totally agree Marcus. From the first night of class during introductions I have each student tell me about themselves and most importantly their occupations. I then use the techniques learned in class and apply the methods of the curriculum to their personal careers using their names and the fields they work in to drive the points home. I see expressions of understanding on their faces and the personal touch seems to make each and every student feel important and to see how the material can personally aid them in their individual occupations.
I agree. Using personal experiences from business allows not only a connection with the material but also helps in giving credence to the instructor's knowledge of the subject. Beyond that, incorporating students' experiences is very beneficial. Students like to share when given the chance to talk about something they know and it solidifies the content. A bonus is that the instructor can learn from a student's experience.
I agree. As teachers, we tend to forget that one of our greatest teaching tools is our industry experience. This way students can learn from our success and failures.
Hi Matthew - Welcome to ED 103! Thanks for that great example - I love the Food Network! Susan
Real world examples engage students in a way that text book knowledge never can. Think food network vs reading a cookbook...
Hi Lionel- Welcome to ED 103! I really agree with you - allowing our students to use the skills that they are learning in real situations that they will encounter in the workplace teaches them the relevance and also increases their retention. Best wishes - Susan
It helps giving real life situation that they might be in as well as real world conflict .
it can also help them to decide or resolved problem quicker.
I really like using personal stories in the classroom. It keeps the student's attention.
Hi Lori- The anecdotal info really demonstrates the relevance of what you are teaching which is another reason why students remember it better. Best wishes - Susan
I agree with Marcus’s style. I have found when I use anecdotal information from my industry experience it gives a “real” feeling to the lecture – not just what the book says. The students tend to remember more when anecdotal stories are shared.
