Questioning sessions as learning tools

How can questioning sessions be used as learning tools?

My learning of the significance of proper techniques was truly reinforced with this session. Although I have a question and answering session in my classes there are some obstacles that I do encounter. It was very helpful. If I might add, when a question is asked of me that I have no knowledge of the response -I admit to not knowing and then along with myself all of the students research the ans at that given time.It seems to be a very helpful reinforcement that education is always continuing and we as individuals will not always have the ans.

I think in my teaching I ask questions so we can bring of the different steps, by asking questions, into set of goals we are trying to achieve.

Questions give students a chance to see how much they know and have retained. It also gives me a chance to see if they are paying attention.

Questioning sessions help the instructor determine if the class is understanding a concept. They also help students to contemplate other ideas and become critical thinkers.

By asking questions and having student participation you can reinforce important take home points from the class. These points will also be helpful so the student can focus on key points from the lecture.

I think it keeps the students engaged.

excellant learning tool! I think I will try it. It might help the students who do not like to talk in class. Great idea.It will help students to participate more and get them motivated and involved.

Students learning class material and listen in their own way and speed, for some students having opportunity to ask question clear the part of the lecture that they missed or they need more detail and explanation.

Questioning sessions help buikd confidence and learning skills to each student.

I agree to use questioning sessions as a learning tool because it allows the student to express what they are unsure of when it comes to learning.

Questioning by the instructors tells them what their students are learning and challenges them to learn more. The more the students are exposed to questioning and positive feedback, the more that want to inquire and in turn become self-motivated learners.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when students feel at ease they are more comfortable engaging in questioning.

I create a trust and respect with my students where they know regardless of the situation I have respect and admiration for them. My students know they are among friends in a judgement free environment. This really helps to eliminate the fear of being wrong.

Questions prompt a person to think ahead, to aniticipate. When a skill is introduced it is frequently done at a basic level and it is not enough to understand the basic level. A perosn has to expect and anticipate layers of complexity to master the skill. Questioning does that. Thinking about where you are going helps you get there.

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are encouraging your students to use critical thinking skills - excellent!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

To check students comprehension of the subject matter, I always use these basic questions:
What, Why, Where, When, and How

In addition, I also stressed the relevance and importance of the subject matter. I always encourage students to think and ask questions such as:

what is the value of this?
why am I learning this?
where can I apply this in my real life?
when will this be applicable to me?
how often will I use this knowledge?

HI John-Howard, That is my story as well!

Overall, I would say for about 17 years -- I started off my career teaching in a university, and it appears that's where my career will end.

In between there was much storm and fury, signifying what it usually signifies....

Hi John - I so enjoy your posts! How long have you been teaching?
