Pop Quizzes and mid-term exams are part of my formative evaluation strategies. However, because I teach computer classes, the exercises, such as creating a letter or doing an Excel spreadsheet becomes a form of evaluation as well.
Hi Courtney, Thanks for your post to the forum. You shared a great example of best practices! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
One of the formative methods that I currently use is comparative analysis of class assignments with students performance on administered quizzes. Questions on the quizzes are taken from the class assignments with little or no change to the format of the questions. The graded quiz and class assignment is returned to the student so that they can self assess and adjust their study habits and or evaluate their critical thinking skills.
Hi Theresa - Thanks for sharing a great throught provoking idea!! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
One of the strategies I have used in the past is to have students write a multiple choice question on a concept that they are particularly having trouble with. There is nothing like trying to write a test question to force you into getting thoroughly grounded in something and understanding it.
FOr the career college that I am in, students tend to be very visual, hands on so I try to do active exercises. I may create a Jepordy dtlye game and split the classroom in 2 teams and ask them questions based on the material.
Using quizzes and initiating a discussion of the topic on that day will see.
I uses quizzes and answer groups as I approach the end of a specific topic, it helps me determine if the subject matter is sticking.
Hi Michael- Thanks for your post to the forum. I use regular quizzes quite often, but also like to ask questions at the star t of each class session. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I use quizzes as well; however I do not do it to an excessive amount. Most of the time, I'll spend the first few minutes of the morning asking pointed questions on material learned the day before. This is an effective method intead of teat after test.
One of the things I do is a corporate wrap. I do this at the end of each teaching day and at the end of a topic. I basically conduct an oral review of key points but I call on students in sequence; letf to right, alphabetical, up and down, etc. I typically will have one question for each student (12 person seminar) and a few bonus questions at the end.
I also use discussion, but use it through out the class. As I change subjects I always have a queestion ready for students to discuss. It keeps them interested the complete class period. When other students participate I find that all students want to participate.
Hi LaToya - I love that idea! It really gives students a clear picture of how far they have progressed! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Maureen - Thanks for sharing soome creative ideas for test preps! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I utilize crossword puzzles and word searches to reinforce lesson plans and assess student knowledge of materials presented in class. These have been helpful prior to testing students for my courses.
I teach math so I like to give student an assignment on the first day. I tell them to anwser as many problems as they can and then I collect them. At the end of the course I give them the same assignment so they can see if they are doing better. I give them the old assigment back and let them compare.
I use content based games like "jeopardy" or "who wants to be a _________", or Not So Trivial Pursuit to periodically check on student learning. These activities are fun and not threatening and give me a good idea of how much the students are learning.
I use oral and written quizzes, projects and oral presentations
I use it if it works otherwise an alternate method is implemented
Hi Kassy - Wow - you have a lot going on in your classroom! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
